I basically wanted to know if implementing something like smooth wall would be more secure then my current solution or should i just stick with what i have. Currently i use a Netgear Prosafe VPN Firewall. What i really want is the added service and network traffic monitoring it seems to have. Or is there something better like OP Manager or Cacti/Zabbix
IPCop > Smoothwall in my experience, and i'd probably place either of those as being "better" than your netgear thing
I like Brazilfw Firewall and Router better than either one. Far less resources, and faster web admin and standard ssh. http://www.brazilfw.com.br
i am now running ipcop . i would have preferred smoothwall 3.0 since it has alot more features but it won't see my pcmcia nic so i have to use ipcop. so far i like it. especially the proxy
The only problem I had with IP Cop is how much ram and cpu it uses. My 233 p3 with 64mb ram just couldn't do it. Brazilfw only needs 12mb and has Squid and Tinyproxy.
i don't think that will be an issue in my case since it's running on a 1.6GHZ Centrion with around 512MB of ram
Disable the proxy features in IPCop. Squid needs a lot of RAM to work decently. I allways ran IPCop from a 486 or a P120 with 32MB RAM, without problems. IPCop Cheesecake!
i think i have settled on ipcop. I am going to run it on the following. Celeron 2.0 GHZ 768MB DDR 40GB HD Anyone know when 1.5 comes out ?
IPCop > all in my opinion. I've got IPCop running on a P3 800Mhz and 512MB Ram with squid on, IDS on, SSH on, Addon server, Net-raffic addon, ip-table addon, nmap addon, enhanced filtering addon, WakeOnLan addon, GUIListenPorts addon, Uptime-Record addon and finally BlockOutTraffic addon. it all runs quite nicely, thats also running a Red, Orange, Green network.
