DDoS in simple terms, lots of traffic from hundreds of IP's to a single page.

Yeah, but they normally suck so hard that Jamie just ignore them ;)

also IIRC (J may need to confirm this), sigs are disabled for users with less then 10 posts due to this.

So was it a deliberate DDOS attack or was it a /. effect to a popular article or something?

Deliberate attack, the page that was being requested was the user profile of a recently banned Russian spammer.

A lot of forums are being abused, for want of a better word; see here. Note comments 20, 21 where the author's bollixed the link. The message is, don't start a no-registration & unmoderated forum, blog or comments section on your site. It will attract abuse like **** attracts flies. :sigh:

Well you know the obvious solution here is to just post his IP on the homepage and have us return the favor :D

I wonder what it cost him to rent the botnet.

EDIT Did it happen again earlier? I was getting the same message about 7 hours ago.

Not from what I can see looking at the bandwidth usage. We flat-lined when the attack was going on, but it looked pretty normal overnight.

Again I was forced to go else where last night and indeed the first time this happened. These DoS attacks are lame T_T

If it's a spammer, the botnet is almost certainly their own. A few hundred IPs, have to feel sorry for someone with an epeen that small :(
