You really only need to go and get one demonstrated for you; the advantages should then be obvious. However, I'll give you five reasons off the top of my head: 1. Flatscreens take up much less space. 2. They are far more energy efficient. 3. They give a more stable and clear picture. 4. You don't get that high-frequency whine that CRT's give off. 5. You can get them in HD.
You can get HD CRTs that have a far better picture than LCDs and Plasmas. Unfortunately size and weight constraints mean that you're unlikely to see them any bigger than around 34" - which is likely to weigh around 100kg and have a depth of nearly 3'
Yup - we've still not beaten CRT's for out-and-out quality yet, it's just the practical aspect of being able to have a 48" TV that's <6" thick mounted on your wall.
I'm a fan of CRT - I had a 21" CRT monitor that could do some rediculous resolution at very high refresh levels. Admittedly it was absolutely huge, but totally worth it! It produced real blacks and amazing contrast / brightness levels, action films always seemed to be better on it than on the LCD. Our TV is a flatscreen CRT, which is certainly better than the curved one as there's a lot less reflections, and the picture appears flat (makes a big difference on large screens). It does 100Hz so there's no flickering / whine. They also seem to be cheaper too.
QFT. I'm still using a 21" CRT, and although the picture is absolutely top-notch, it's a ballache to lose 2'6" of space on your desk...
Want a picture 100" or bigger with the quality of CRT that doesn't stick out from the wall? CRT projectors! Nothing comes close to their quality or reliability, the only reason you see LCD/DLP being sold is because it is cheaper to produce and they know they will make money selling you bulbs every few hundred to 1000 hours or sell you a whole new one when something goes wrong with in in a year or 2 as they are not repairable or cost too much to repair, CRT projectors however are repairable and are worth repairing IF something goes wrong. The CRT's in CRT projectors last years and years and years and years, mine has been going for 14 years without any repairs or tube replacement, over 80,000 hours on the tubes, NO digital projector will last that long let alone the bulbs they use. CRT projection is still king!
2 isn't necessarily true. Most plasmas have similar power requirements to CRTs. Not 100%, but you're not looking at a quarter of the power usage either. LCDs tend to be quite a bit better, but check the labels.
On the rare occasions that I had to pick up my consoles and move them upstairs where we have an old CRT TV, I have actually been impressed by the picture quality of the CRT... it just seems better defined than on an LCD... Though I'd go for the LCD. Don't know why... just do it
random. flat screens (correct me if i'm wrong, i'm sure you will) can display High Definition content (like Blue Ray discs, PS3/360 games, and HDTV) CRTs can't. They are flat, lighter and thinner than CRT TVs (ordinary TV's) so can live somewhere other than the corner of your room, like walls, fireplaces, ceilings, et cetera, et cetera. But they can use more energy, you could probably dry your washing on some of them, tho more eco friendly ones are coming out. Why do you ask? EDIT: sorry CRT's can display HD apparently.
Flat CRT vs. CRT: Less distortion to picture, often widescreen, generally newer. TFT vs. LCD: LCD is much thinner, lighter and nicer to look at, CRT is the last word in picture quality. Basically.
