Hey, just got my new Macbook Pro today. Very very nice machine! It of course has changed to have only the firewire 800 port on the side. I've got a firewire 400 Presonus Firepod audio interface that I still need to use, was wondering if its possible to get a little converter dongley thing that plugs into my 800 port and lets you plug a standard 400 lead into it? Or anywhere that does cheap 800-400 leads? Cheers for any help!

Looks that way - how does firewire technology work then, do they just step down to 400 once you lose those 3 extra pins?
In Firewire, 2 pins are for power and power alone. That's why you see 4-pin and 6-pin Firewire400. The other 4 pins are the Firewire400 data pins, creating the IEEE1394a standard. In Firewire800/1600/3200, three more pins are added. When the pins are present (both devices are Firewire800/1600/3200), then the data is transferred at the faster speeds, depending on what chipset each side has, making IEEE1394b. Since the original 6 pins are still present, if the other three pins are not detected on either end, then it merely reverts back to the IEEE1394a standard. I'm sure someone can write a much more technical and detailed report, but that's the basics.

Basically, yeah. I don't think it's quite that simple, but using an 800-400 cable will allow the host to figure out what it needs to. I don't know if there's a UK equivalent of Monoprice, but if so that would be a good place to look.
Cheers guys. Theres a few on ebuyer and amazon so i'll pop an order in tomorrow Its a shame there isnt just a little converter lead thing, as I have 5 or so 6-6pin leads that are now wasted...

Or this? http://www.cableclub.com/firewire-adapter-mbps6-female-male-p-795.html Or how about this? http://www.usbfirewire.com/Parts/rr-adp-96-01.html I just googled "9-pin male to 6-pin female" and got a bunch of results. Good luck on whatever you get.

Cool, did anyone take notice of this on the Shaggymac site: http://www.shaggymac.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=3_4&products_id=82 The adapters will have to do for now. not as clean as I would prefer.
