Being creative in the kitchen just took on a new meaning :D Should get that on the food network lol. What kind of rpms are you looking at when milling wax, also does it require any special bits or should I say end mills?

    Thanks p0Pe :D

    Yeah its awesome stuff :D

    Thanks Talladega :thumb:, Nice :p

Yeah I know how to sandcast, but I don't have the equipment to do it myself :(, so I'm just gonna make the mould. Although I haven't decided yet whether I'm going to sandcast or Lost wax cast.

Yeah lol :D, yeah just normal end mills, heres the specs:

Well that's just downright awesome with the lost wax process. Really looking forward to what you come up with. :)

What bits are you going to make with this process, and how much does the wax and getting it sent off and cast cost?

Thanks :thumb:, I'm going to be making the top of the case with the casting as it has a compound curve on each corner. The wax cost £15 per Kg for small quantities, or £7 per kg direct from the suppliers but the minimum order is 15KG. The sandcasting cost is based on weight of the aluminium used, the top of this case will be around £30, but it depends on which company you use. I can get castings made cheaply as my father has a business account with a casting company.

You have to make the form to create the mould as well, because most sandcasters only do sandcasting they don't create the form to create the sand mould. I'm not sure about the cost of lost wax yet, I'm gonna find out soon though.

Don't forget to account for shrinkage.

    Yep, thanks :D

Yeah, this was my second attempt at the wax moulding as the first one I made shrunk loads, it was on the previous page of my thread.

    Thanks Cheapskate :thumb:

I'll be machining the wax tomorrow

Ah right, yeah I've scaled the 3d model to account for shrinkage, thanks for the reminder though :)

This isn't the entire top of the case, the wax mould will be chopped in half.

All it needs now is too smooth out throughs ridges. Heres all the remains, its like wax snow :):

I was gonna make a video of the CNC in action but my video cam's battery died so I'm gonna make the video when I do the next bit of CNC'ing.

I would compare it to acrylic, its pretty strong in thick peices, however its quite brittle, unless its in a large block which then its incredibly strong. I tried to break the blocks apart with the back end of a hammer so I could melt them but all it did was chip the corner a bit.

I assume the wax remainders can be recycled into new wax blocks?

Heres the cnc machine finishing up with a small stepover:

The sides are now much smoother:

Next up will be to sand it down then do the inside.

I've got a video too, which I'll upload in a few min, it could take quite a while though as my upload speed is crap.

Edit: Actually I'll upload it at college tomorrow its gonna takes hours on my slow upload speed
