    Anyone used them?

I got one in the Play.com sale and think it's brilliant!

The only bad point is you have to use a string to get the gyro spinning - would be great if you didn't have to use a string as it would mean you could use it anywhere without worrying you will lose the string!

Maybe there are models that don't need one?

I have one. It's possible to start them using a flick from your thumb, but I haven't cracked it yet. Also, mine is incredibly loud. And my forearms used to burn after about an hour at 8000 rpm steadily xD

Roll it along a flattish surface which has some give in it. An arm or leg usually does the trick to get it spinning.

If you start it without the string you WILL wear out the bearings eventually (Words of Experience)

But it is really easy to start with your thumb once you get the hang of it. Getting 10k is the first mission.

The thumb flick start takes a bit of practice but you get it in the end. I had one a few years ago, used it pretty regularly for a couple of months and my record was about 12.5k if I remember correctly. Trying to keep one going in each hand at the same time is fun too :D Good fun, good fun.

Bought one when my wrist started bothering me while fencing, it's worked wonders.

Yeah, I have a few. You're late to the party though, we had this thread back in Summer '04 ;) We even had PowerBallAdmin sign up and create a mini-league for us.

That's a good idea, mine get tired quite easily.

I just hope I don't turn into one of those people with suspiciously lopsided forearm strength. :worried:

Oooh, you guys have me thinking about getting one of these to strengthen my left hand for guitar. (Yes that is my story, and yes I will be sticking to it)

Which one is best to get for someone who hasn't even touched one of these before.

Oh and @gcwebbyuk apart from what others are saying about getting it started without the string, it seems you can buy a pack of them.

Good spot Matticus - mine is the 250Hz Regular - was £8.50 on Play.

I bought it to help me get some excersise - had an op on my neck a year ago to replace two discs with spacers - see my avatar <--- . Annoyingly the op hasn't fixed the issue and a year down the road I can do not much else other than sit at my computer - luckily I work in IT so at least I haven't lost my career!

The powerball seems to be a good way of building some arm strength, and get back some muscle in my arms (shame they don't do them for your legs!). I used to have a strong grip from mountain biking and holding on tight, but after a year of nothing it seems to have weakened, hopefully these will bring it back ready for when I can get back on the bike again :) (whenever that will be...)
