2 ltrs of 1% fat milk- £1.10 introductory price
    1 loaf of medium bread
    8 sachets of cuppa soup
One box of 8 choc ices
    1 round lettuce
    1 500ml tub of own-brand olive spread
1 ltr own brand concentrated orange squash

Being unemployed is fun, you get to seek out all the bargains and live for a week on ~£10. :D

Just gotten a great lead on a new job though which will last for the whole summer season if not all year round, so I'm feeling a bit more upbeat today.

    Co-op?
I'm the same, very little room left on my overdraft, just bought some pasta, own brand cereal, the same milk I'm sure, some cheap pasta sauces.

you know what's cheaper than cheap pasta sauces?

making your own pasta sauces. and they taste better too!

seriously, carbonara is basically just egg, parmesan and bacon. easy.

tomato sauce? onion, tomato and basil. ponce it up with some wine. easy!

You should come over to Ireland and teach this to numpties who genuinely don't think this is possible and think that €180 a week is too little to live on (circumstances depending naturally).

There was a programme on here a while back about cutting down shopping.

I watched the first episode where they miraculously got their weekly shop down from £400 to just £250.

    Honestly I nearly threw up.

    Wasteful expletives.

    QFT.

Baring in mind inflation, we could feed a family of six on my Dad's wages which was about ~£200 a week, along with all the other household bills.

The amount of money wasted on 'premium' brands that are no better for you than the own-brand stuff is just maddening, especially since studies have shown organic veg to have less nutrients than normal veg- and who spends money on bottled water for the home when we live in a first world country?

When I was employed my weekly shop was still no more than ~£20-25, and that was due to buying lunch at work most days.

And yeah, Co-op milk for £1.10- its not until you shop elsewhere though you realize how much you can save on a weekly shop without necessarily resorting to the really cheap 'value' ranges.

13p packets of noodles & 17p tins of soup can't be beat- I love SainsBurys and Lidl....

AHHH! Pisses me off so much! I know quite a few people who only drink bottled water. It even annoys me when people use a filter jug thing. [/thread derailment]

:worried: we get bottled water at my house :worried:

but we aren't on the city water. we have our own well, which is probably fine, but when we had the water tested a few years back it was just barely out of the "safe" range.

Frugalism is alive and well in the US. Dollar Tree stores. A single money strapped individual could write a cookbook using just $1 items. Are there European eqivs of 'everything for a $'?

Will be transporting my signature's gear into it (perhaps with a new modular PSU) this weekend I think.
