Hi! I just finished building my new PC and I tried installing Windows 7 64bit. The product key didn't work during the initial setup so I decided to skip it and deal with it later. Once I got to the desktop, the System Information window says I have 32-bit windows and can only access 3GB of my ram (32 bit, duh.) I never saw the option to choose 64 bit during installation and I could've sworn it was the correct installation disk. Could it have something to do with skipping the product key?
Is it retail boxed or OEM Windows 7? If it's OEM, you don't have an option to choose. If it's retail boxed then I'd say you used the wrong disc. (There are 2 discs aren't there? I seem to remember someone telling me that lol)
I got a windows 7 professional 64 bit key from MSDNAA through our school, and I burnt the iso itself. The disc name, once it's in the drive, for some reason doesn't allude to whether it's a 64bit installer or not, so maybe I just used the wrong disc, but I can't remember burning a 32bit disc.
wrong disk - the key doesn't specify the architecture it just specifies what parts of windows are available to you.
I thought that the downloads only supplied either 32 OR 64 bit, in which case he wouldn't have 2 discs. Edit: Wait a minute, aren't the student offer ones upgrade discs? If I'm right, did you do the double install method or the registry change after install?
MSDNAA copies are kind of their own version. They don't state OEM or Retail. And yes, through MSDNAA the 32bit and 64bit versions are seperate. So maybe you downloaded the wrong one OP? I love MSDNAA, made sure to get what I could while I was still at uni,
Ahhh, must remember that one +rep Cerberus90 Is it possible he's got a 64 bit activation key, but a 32 bit install disc? I don't know how this MSDNAA thing actually works
It could be, but you'd have to 'buy' both to end up with one and not the other. You add products to your cart, but there's not cost, its just a way of tracking and recording what you've bought. Does sound a bit odd. OP, did you download the ISO yourself?
As everyone said, you download the wrong ISO file. In fact I think you got that ISO NOT from MSNDAA, because the product key should work 100% no mater the language or if it is 32 or 64-bit. So if you did not get MSDNAA ISO and license key yourself.. don't trust someone else. To save you DVD's. I suggest to use Microsoft ISO to USB tool (free). All you need is a 8GB USB key. The faster the better. A very fast one, you can easily install Win7 in 7-8 min. Download here, at Microsoft open Source Community site: http://wudt.codeplex.com/
