Hi guys. ive been a bit of a ****, and removing the sata cable from my SSD, i managed to pull off the plastic bit above the sata cable on the HDD, the bit that holds the cable in. Is there any way that anyone or any couple could fix it? pics included? ty?
How long have you had this for? I doubt you will be able to RMA this as its damaged. You could try claim it on insurance?
If you've got the piece I would try some Loctite sillicon car sealant to keep it in place, rather than glue - strong and very good for bonding, but not too tricky to handle.
If I was a bit nearer I'd have a good pop at fixing that for you. As above, a strong adhesive will be needed, along with a pair of precision tweezers, a steady hand and a bit of patience! If you have lost the piece it's a bit more of a specialist repair unfortunately, but still not impossible.
That is an annoying thing to happen. I did that with my SSD but I managed to pull off the power connection plastic and now all the pins have either broke or bent. What you can do if the above doesn't work is slide the plastic broken bit into the SATA cable and then attach the SATA cable to the SSD. It will stay in place but you have to be careful not to bend any of the pins like I did
Managed to do this with a hard disk a few years back. All the plastic stayed in the sata connector so I just carefully plugged it back in and hot glue the sata connector in place. Still working 3-4 years on just have be be careful when moving it.
Whilst not exactly cheap, how's about something like this? i've just tested the exact part with one of the V2s i pulled from the proper machine & it works as a SATA pass-through - being detected in Computer Management - & very securely fits to both the power & data connectors (though it 'might' be slightly looser on the data end on yours - i'm obviously not going to break bits off a SSD to test). The other option would be to see if there's a cheap hot plug dock on eBay - though that naturally increases the size of the thing.
thanks for all of the replys. The piece is stuck in the cable. I tried taping it in, but the slightest knock to my case caused it to shift ever so slightly, ruining it. RMA would probably just laugh at me for my stupidity. I like the look of whatever that sata thing is. £13 quid to save a 200 quid ssd? lol sounds alright to me. How does it work??
As i have both a 'professional' SAS version of that cable (with a SFF-8087 connector on the other end going to 4 of them) & the piece i was suggesting, all i can say is that the one i linked to fits much more tightly & securely... i can't comment on how good or bad the one you've suggested is though. Yeah, i'm certainly not saying that the part i've suggested is the only option (or that there's not a cheaper 3rd party version) - it's simply that i happen to have a couple around that came with 2 of my 15K7s &, since they had the part no on them, it was a place to start... ...well, it's going to be much better than attempting to glue things. You simply plug the thing in between the drive & the SATA power & data cables - it's a single piece of plastic (with sprung metal 'pins' - can't think of a better name - to link one side to the other) that grips across the the length of both the drives power & data connectors. Yeah, i didn't know whether you were looking at repairing a ~£60-80 SSD or a £300-400 one - & naturally £13 on a cheap one wouldn't be that economical.
