I want to get an OK video camera to record the birth of my first born. In Canada I would have gone to futureshop, bought an 'open box' model and return it after the birth. Talking with a friend, he thinks that I would have trouble as he thinks 'open box' models are not sold and that a return may be refused. This would have been ideal as I only need to use it for one day. I'm in London and don't know anyone here with one I can borrow. If prices are reasonable I wouldn't not mind renting one. My mother-in-law will be using it while I'm holding my wife's hand. It doesn't need to be professional, just better than an iphone.

I was thinking the same - either buy one and keep it, or hire one!

Hmm, rental is a bit more expensive than I thought.
Rental per day is £35, buying a new camera at Currys is £130

We will be getting an s7 and the new iPhone when it comes out.
I can borrow a recent cannon body and pair it with my 17-85mm IS USM lens.
I have the 450d which is the model just before they started doing video.
Would this be easy to use for a mother-in-law that knows nothing about tech?
Can it record video and take stills at the same time?

A go pro would be a fun choice

Easy? debatable, but possible. Know anybody who can lend you a GoPro?
