Better yet - the 1TB is only $500. Well I say only, that is of course still ludicrous, but it was less than I expected.

Also, before anyone asks, no, there is almost no point in owning one of these vs a good SSD. Still want one though.

NVMe is such a massive speed boost over AHCI, and it's unreal. I love my M.2 drive. I would hate to go back to not using one again. Minus the AHCI M.2 in my ultrabook which I don't think can take NVMe, I would not opt to go for anything less these days.

Still not great pricing, but the 1TB doesn't appear to be too much over the odds compared to the 850 Pro... ...whilst the 512GB looks to be stupidly priced.

256GB = £120 vs £102
512GB = £220 vs £175
1TB = £360 vs £330

Okay, you'd need a usage that needed that could benefit - however, as there are some a/v batch processing tasks that i have which are drive bottlenecked with a single SATA SSD & it would only be a tenner more to go for a 1TB SM961 than a pair of 512GB Pros then if someone *needed* a/some SSDs then it would be an option.


Just wish that there were u.2 versions.


Mmmmm... i wonder if Overclockers are pricing on the basis of leaving & Flexx on remaining - as the difference is comfortably within the realms of what's predicted for the pound to fall if we were to leave...

...or is it just Overclockers charging all the money for no good reason???

 

If the 1TB 950 Pro m.2 doesnlt surface soon, I might jump on the SM961 or Toshiba XG3. It would be nicer to have the single-sided board of the 950 Pro though.

 

Not sure where my mind went earlier, but excluding the potential price hikes after Thursday, it shouldn't be long before the PM961 appears in the channel... ...& that should be a much more cost effect buy for those rare consumers who have an usual usage that might justify it (or only a m.2 slot in a laptop or space in a tiny case or...).

Well, to have a market then they've sensibly got to be noticeably cheaper than the SM961.

interestingly, just checking, Flexx's pricing for the 256GB & 512GB SM961 are both about £20 cheaper than the 950 Pro - though you'd need to balance only having a 2 year warranty d.t. it being an OEM drive vs a 5 year one.

 

Lets just take a moment to appreciate that we now have 1TB of storage with more bandwidth than the main memory of a Pentium 4 computer.

Well that's bloody annoying. My 950 Pro is all of 2 months old, and I only just this week bought an enclosure to keep temps low and tidy things up a bit.

Will there be a new 9xx Pro consumer drive with the new controller?

Edit: Trying not to be butthurt about paying £80 more for something that performs less - I can only take solace in the fact that it's not an awful PCB green colour

 

it's >99.9% certain that there will be a 960 Pro & a 960 Evo (consumer versions of the SM961 & PM961) later in the year...

I've seen an ASSSD performance screenshot in a closed FB group and SM961 performance in.sane (albeit in Win Server 2012 with setup by a professional).

Prepare your wallets for a case of upgraditis.

 

Damn, after this generation of SSD's we're going to need minimums of x8 PCIE 3 or x4 PCIE 4 to be able to reach peak speeds...

Decided to chop in the 950 while it's still barely been used. Can't have too much SSD performance when VDisks are involved

 

PCIE 4 should be here after Kaby.
