Blimey. A 15 year old post with no replies. One question occurs for me, what is meant by a LAN box? LAN gaming perhaps but I'm more likely to build a SAN or server.
I'm still waiting on replies, a little help here plz! In the time between original post and now I've graduated university, put 10 years into a professional career, met my wife, married my wife and had two kids. I don't have time for games, let alone LANs now
Bindi should be ashamed of using 'u' twice in that OP. We were all young and foolish once, but a man has to have standards. Disappoint.
Just in case your question was serious, storage area network. A SAN box would be a casual term for a storage device with access via block protocols (e.g. iSCSI or FC) over a network (i.e. the SAN), thus the contrast with a NAS box (NFS or CIFS)
Man when you think about it... Moved to the USA, got married, got divorced, moved back, met a new lady and got married again etc. Amazing how much has happened in the last 15 years really !
Interesting to see that the cost for example kit hasn't changed much, must be a sweet spot for how much a punter will pay: disk = £85; power supply £145. Of course the sizes/capacity have gone up quite a bit, except for the power supplies tho.
Anyone else start considering if they have IDE cables knocking around? I thought this must be some retro project before I saw the date! What about inflation?! That is why Nvidia GPUs are so expensive now, allegedly.
In America. Everywhere else it has more to do with the exchange rate vs the US$ as the MSRP of computer components is always decided in US$.
