I've been a regular poster over at the Futuremark forum, so some of you might have seen this mod. It took some creative license and some elbow grease, but I've finally finished my PowerMac G4 to PC mod. Here are a few pics of the process it took converting a PowerMac G4 case into an AthlonXP 2600+ machine. First of all, you might be thinking, "why does it look like its upside down?" Well, that's because it is...well, at least the front plastic panel is. I relocated the CD-ROM drive to the lower part of the case (so the microATX motherboard would fit), so in turn, I had to flip the front plastic panel upsidedown to accomidate this. After some careful fabrication, I got the CD-ROM door to open correctly and I also built a custom LED power switch. Here's the final beast. I just put in the top 80mm Blue LED exhaust fan a couple of days ago. Total Build Time: September 13 - October 30 Here's the custom made LED power button. The case I bought did'nt come with the on/off switch or LED, just the decorative button (the part you see from the front of the case), so I had to make one. I had to de-solder and remove the onboard sound, video, parallel, and serial ports in order for the rear 60mm fan to fit. I had to do a lot more modding to get to the finished product, but these pics highlight the major mods. Other modifications were: removing the old mobo mounts and installing new ones, cutting an air intake hole for the new Antec 480watt PSU, cutting out internal case panels to increase airflow, modifying the internal 120mm case fan shroud, cutting out the rear case plate for new motherboard ports, and more! MORE PICS: EARLY PICTURE. internal black 80mm fan has been removed. Also, stock AMD HSF was replaced. The air intake for the new 480watt PSU. The rear plate had to be cut out to allow for the new motherboard ports. Here's the case with most of the plastic panels removed. Here's the modified front plastic panel. where did you get your case? I've been trying to hit up local repair shops with dead G4 towers, and no luck!
Keep in mind, my pic hosting account only has a daily bandwidth limit of 220MB. If you see X's, check back the next day. Hmmmmm....unless somebody wants to host these pics for me?
Nice work , I like what you did with the cd drives , its a pain they don't fit. I had to have mine at the rear of the case on its side
Very nice job. I am going to be doing a G4 mod in a bit. To answer a question that was posted before. G4 cases can be found here http://www.welovemacs.com/qscasenpower.html Once again nice case.
My next mod, or computer for that matter, is probably going to be a G5 to PC conversion. I just have to wait until the G5's are as cheap as the G4's are! *machinaEX waits....and waits....and waits.....*
Actually, I think you mean "Rotten Apple", the mod by Brian Holmes. His article in the September 2002 issue of CPU Magazine was what inspired me to make my mod.
