Right guys i have been out of the PC game for a very long time, im currently running a i7 2700k, with a 980ti hydrocopper and full watercooling in a massive Paantek Enthoo case (cant remember which one i think its the first case they did)

Now ive picked up a new monitor (LG 32GK650F) and ive read that adaptive sync wont work when using a nvidia card lower than the 10 series. so i in a bit of a conundrum should i upgrade the GPU or should i upgrade the the whole rig and leave the 980ti?

Also i assume since AMD are the ones to go for what should i choose?

Edit: Ive got a new PSU, ive got 2 x SSDs so wont be needing those

Although the i7 2700k is a bit long in the tooth, I think a GPU upgrade will give you the most benefit.

The higher res you go, the more the GPU is loaded and less work for the CPU. It looks like your new monitor is 1440p, so the i7 will cope better than with a 1080p res monitor.

The AMD cards are still more power hungry and hotter running on the whole, compared to Nvidia.

I can't recommend a particular card for 1440p, but would suggest a used Nvidia 1080 or 1080Ti for starters over a new 2080 or 2070 super.

so you dont think i should go down the AMD ryzen build route and then try and pick up a 1070/1080?

That IS a good question, depends on your budget...
There's no question that a Ryzen build will be an improvement, but 1440p will probably need a minimum, of a 1080 from what I can see. At least, you'll get the adaptive sync even though it's not AMD.

You won't game any faster at that res with a CPU upgrade, perhaps some improved minimum frames which may help ceertain titles but generally for games a better GPU is where is is at.

Interesting so best to stick with my current setup but change the GPU, which means I'll have to pick up a water block for a 1080

This isn't true. I got a 1080 and moved to a 1440 screen, my old 3570k@4.6GHz really struggled. The 6800k I'm currently running (grabbed it second hand) added 20-40 frames in most games because so many titles use lots of threads now!

@flame696 How much do you want to spend? There have been some good GPU and CPU sales in the marketplace on here recenntly (its where I got my CPU, Motherboard, RAM and GPU), plus if you get a secondhand CPU+Motherboard it'll come with windows 10 as its tied to the computer ID :)

I'd upgrade the whole lot, keep your power supply, case and storage.

Go second hand then! A 1080 will be around £300, £400 for a 1080ti and a good CPU, motherboard, RAM will be £200-£300 :)

Whilst I agree with the threaded aspect, his cpu is 4c/8t so not crap really, a 3570k is only 4 threads so a very poor comparison so of course it would struggle, yes he won't have maximum but if you want to do one thing due to budgetary constraints for games and you have an 8thread cpu thats clocked well it would be gpu. Of course in the ideal world you would do it all.

    Some backup

8700k vs 2600k @1440p, 8700k still better than a lot of modern chips this is with a 1080, obviously his gpu would be limiting worse.

Next shows an oc'd 2600k against modernish stuff to give you idea of CPU bump percentage

    https://www.anandtech.com/print/140...el-core-i7-2600k-testing-sandy-bridge-in-2019

Also here are some numbers of 980ti vs 1080ti on a ryzen 1800x, which is stronger than a 2700k sure but if you have clocked the 2700k it would be strnger, has single card numbers

    https://www.tweaktown.com/articles/8116/gtx-980-ti-sli-vs-1080-amd-ryzen-1800x/index5.html

To me GPU gives the stronger percentage bump, of course if you are not overclocking CPU, then yes change CPU but I assume you have a K to overclock.

I'd go with the following in your case: https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/LfPnGc
You could recoup some of the expenses by selling what you have, especially the 980ti.
You could possibly also find the CPU (and maybe a motherboard) second hand.

Ah yees, I totally forgot it was a 4c8t chip! Even still I think the £200-£300 for a second had upgrad is still relly worth while, especially as then it would allow modern tech like NVMe M.2 drives! But yeh, a 1080 is a minimum upgradee, do that before anythinng else!

Don't forget there's also the potentially added cost of windows to this as well...

I'm currently stripping the rig for a clean as I have not done anything with it for approx 2 years

1070 is no faster than your 980ti. At all.

1080 not worth it either, as it's only 15% or so faster.

Personally I'd just grab a 2070 super and start from there.
