Sooo… given that the US is threatening sanctions if Iraq asks US troops to leave, does that mean Iraq is an occupied nation again?

So the 2020 us election could be decided by whether Russia or Iran has the most competent hackers.

Iranian rockets hit a U.S base in Iraq, a moment ago.

This is going to end fantastically.

Trump is legendary for his tact, humility, and negotiation finesse.

He's a modern day Henry Kissinger.

Definitely not the byproduct of a wotsit and a centaur mating.

I was half expecting to wake up to find that Iran had been nuked after reading about this last night so i guess that's good news.

Think everyone new this was coming and it will be considered as 'proportionate'.

    No current casualties.

Whether it stays like this is anybody's guess, Trump employs no strategy or forward planning - it's like being faced by by a two year old waving a loaded gun around.

Feels like a cooler heads prevail moment (for now at least). I bet there's been a lot of backchannel diplomacy going on that doesn't directly involve Trump.

Iran being able to strike back in some limited form seemed vital for them politically. The US not re-escalating immediately in response to this and then indicating that it believes Iran forces have stood down rather suggests there are forces on both sides working to semi-mutually de-escalate.

Even McConnel publicly thanked Trump for keeping his mouth shut for 5 minutes while the adults figured a way out of the mess he'd made.

If Iran's forewarned attacks on US military bases are the extent of their retaliation I'll eat my hat, i suspect they were more for show and to give people like Trump a false sense of security or a job well done, to let him have his peacocking moment.

It's a pretty good response to be honest: no US causalities for them to drum up support for a direct response with, no allied impacts that would encourage them to support any US' expeditionary ambitions, but a military embarrassment to both have gone right through their local missile-defense (worse if they were forewarned too) and were surprisingly accurate in targeting demonstrating actual operational capability rather than the assumed "look at our big rockets whoooooo scary scary" functionality that is generally assumed of indigenous Iranian missiles.

Anyway to get better access to these images. This doesn't look like anything I've seen quality wise for images this recent

Those images are from Planet Labs, and looks to be around their 1m/pixel max panchromatic res for their current Earth-observation fleet. KENNEN/CRYSTAL would have higher res, but no change of seeing those unless Trump decides to compromise operational capability again (and the NRO probably have made their feelings very clear in that regard).

If you have a disposable email address you can get a 14 day trial access to their imagery via Planet.com
