I realised I haven't posted a work log on here yet, so here ya go. Goal: My own, built from scratch, factory-quality aluminum computer case. Design: Chassis based loosely on the PC-60. Reworked completely. Form follows function. Materials: Front bezel- 1/8" aluminum, everything else- 18 gage (0.049") aluminum. Engineering: Drawn completely in Rhino3D. 100% accurate. Currently a 65meg 3D file. Ready to be sent to the laser. Details: 92mm front intake fan with machined aluminum bezel/power switch Vertical hard drive mounting for easy wire hiding. All drive faces machined from aluminum for a stealth look with better function Led-lit aluminum/acrylic case feet. USB/audio ports hidden behind front door. Floppy drive hidden behind door. Status: CAD work 95% complete. One cd drive face 75% complete. Several pieces have been cut, but need to be finished and bent. CAD renderings: CD-Drive face: Raw aluminum: Milling: Finished pieces: Test fit on cd drive: Laser cut pieces: That's it for now. Next I need to work out a few final details of the chassis and outer panel construction and cut those. I'm also not 100% sure paint and finishes yet. I'd really like to engine-turn all the drive trays and faces.
WOW That looks sweet so far. I think you will acomplish your goal, you have the tools to do it. Or your spending the money to get it done. Either way you will end up with a nice aluminum case
I wish I had access to a nice laser cutter like that... Looking good, interesting hard drive setup you have (vertically) rendered.
Thanks guys! ishiii: I really will have very little money into this project. At least as far as teh case goes. When it's done, I'd like to upgrade to a P4 3.2 or something a little faster than this AMD@1.55. Basically, I just have to buy the aluminum. Most of the pieces I'm machining are from the scrap pile. Twernmilt: Yeah, that's a fair bit of laser cutting, but it's only maybe a quarter of the parts. Still got the chassis and all the panels to go. mcbeckel: Rhino3D is my best friend Sketchup may be a good place to learn, but it seems kinda sloppy. And Max is amazing for visualization stuff like rendering and animation, but it's pretty much worthless for engineering/design.
nice i just suscribed. whats your secret for ur grafic designs , the most iv ever managed is a blob .o well its lookin great cant wait to see more!! - - --xrain--
Hmm nice, lotta work in it! I like the drive covers! ...and the back panels ......and the pretty much everything. Are you going to make the bezel out of alu too?
Wonderful!!! I really love those fan grills near the cut pieces..... Waiting to see the progress of your work..
Dood, that is gonna be an awesome case. I love that drive bay cover. What're you planning on using for the buttons on them?
