News Cable taps into wiretap law

At least one cable operator is starting to comply with a federal law that has long required telecommunications carriers to help police conduct electronic surveillance, according to a source familiar with the company's plans.

Time Warner Cable is the first cable company to begin trying to adhere to the Communications Assistance For Law Enforcement Act, the source said. Cable companies are not yet required to comply with the 1994 wiretap law, but they see the writing on the wall.

Vernon Irvin, executive vice president at security vendor VeriSign, said during a recent interview that his company had signed a deal with a "major cable operator" in the United States to help it follow CALEA. He did not identify the provider, but the source tagged Time Warner as the company. A Time Warner representative did not have an immediate comment.

Irvin, however, did assert that other cable companies are sure to follow. That's because the FBI has made public a far-reaching proposal to require all broadband Internet providers--including cable modem and digital subscriber line (DSL) companies--to restructure their networks to support easy wiretapping by police.

I don't do anything illegal, but this is just crazy. I'm just waiting for the day that the general population wakes up and sees just how little freedom we have left anymore.

Anyways, a friend of mine searched for and began downloading "Chinatown". He stopped the download because it was going too slow (low sources) and deleted the temp files. Well, a week or two later, he gets a letter from his cable company (Comcast). "Delete the file and we won't shut down your internet". Well, he already had so it wasn't a big problem, but it freaked him out (hes a big movie downloader). Is this the kind of stuff we'll be seeing more of?

I wouldn't say "no freedom". You're not SUPPOSED to have the freedom to download things in the first place. It was only a matter of time before something like this happens...Wonder when it's gonna happen to DSL?

Jim, this isn't about 13 year olds complaining they can't download goat porn for free, this is about basic privacy, security of self being and thought, freedom of speech, thought, and opinion. You might have noticed some similarities to the current society as there were shortly before WW2 with Jewish registration.

I don't the RCMP, FBI, MI5, or anyone shoving a gun up my ass everytime I mention I hate the government in an online chat with friends.

 

I honestly couldn't care less right now... All they're doing is putting everyone in a glass house. I really don't care if the neighbors see me naked, it's their loss. I'm doing nothing wrong, I'm in my own home minding my own business... Likewise, if I'm sitting here posting on bit and someone wants to waste their time monitoring me, I don't care. It doesn't effect my life in any way...

And the FBI can't "shove a gun up my ass" for saying I don't like the government. They can red-flag me if I do something like make a bomb threat, but generally saying "Man, that Bill Clinton was a real *******" amounts to absolutely nothing.

 

we already have the RIP act here in the uk (Regulation of invetegatory powers act i think it stands for). It means that even the post office can now bug, tap, force you to reveil or your encrypted information and handover your computer and all related kit like mobile phones and your not allowed to tell anyone your being investigated let alone why. So far theres no known cases of this new law being used, and its suposidly there to 'protect us from terroists and pedophiles' etc etc but imo its just a load of bollox by politically/financially motivate people who are scared of an ever increasing technology they dont understand.

 

Its strange that most of the new laws being passed - on both sides of the Atlantic, - would have the greatest effect if used against the general population. Its also true that no State ever granted itself a power that it didn't use.

The concern isn't that the current administrations in North America and U.K. woud abuse those powers but that a future administration certainly would. Many of the laws that would benefit a dictatorship are now in place and, presently, the population will get used to them.

I dont think this is that big of a deal. I mean they can already tap phone lines. They still would need a court approved warrant to tap your lines. this just lets them tap cable modem and dsl easier along with the regular phone lines. I do see our freedoms slowly being chipped away by this whole anti-terrorist stuff. The Patriot act. It eerily reminds me of the denzel washington movie Under siege, Watch it and you'lll see what I mean

Dude, i could have sworm that Under Siege was Steven Segaul. any who. I dont do anything to actually make them WANT to tap my line, but yes I can see how our freedome is going down the toilet. I mean hey I can understand why they are doing it, but the fact that they are using that retarted "anti-terrorist" crap for the excuse. Kind of like saying in a way, "Hey were tapping your line so we can protect you, but if you do anything we see as suspicious, expect a knock on your door from men in black suits and sunglasses." But hey like I said, I'm not doing anything to make them suspect me.

HA there's 2 under sieges the corny action movie with steven segaul. And the eerily relevant movie with denzel washington I highly reccommend you check it out! Stupid white men was a good book albeit slightly outdated now as it was b4 this whole Iraqi war crap. I think it's true to an extent that they are using terrorism as an excuse to invade rights. I think america isn't upholding democractic values in the way we played out this whole war against terror and we're acting no better then them

Our idiots can hide their mistakes. That's the main difference. That and it's just regular bacon up here, not Canadian Bacon.

Thus far thsoe issues which threaten American citizens are also in range of affecting Canadian citzens, much as they are of affecting most people world wide. I'm afraid for the time being we're all on the derailing train.

 

Only real difference being that, in Texas we're conducting... and we're having fun doing it.

Back on topic, at least in the US/UK/Canada this is still an issue... In North Korea it could be done and be considered normal. Something that would HAVE to be accepted whether one liked it or not... meh.

 

The way I see it it's like the USA is a train, a few individuals at the helm, the rest of the world in the passenger cars behind... The train is doing, as you suggested, about 200mph toward many many thick superstrong brick walls...

Now, you can fight your way to the top to try to stop the train, try to call a switching station and get the train to redirect its course, sit comfortably and enjoy the ride, or jump off and die in a tumbling bloody mess...

Or, as you suggested, leave the US and move to another coach car...
