Hi I'm wanting to build a 64Bit system I've tried looking into it myself but it just confused me lol. I'd like to know what mother board is good and want CPU would be good for it. Im going to get a Sapphire Radeon X800 XT, so 8X AGP is a must. I'm looking at cpu of at least 2.4Ghz and im Planning to water cool it so overclocking is an option I'd look into. The price's wont bother me just let but I dont really wanna see a motherboard that cost's something stupid like £200. Edit - Im now thinking about a mobo with PCI express
Hey bud, Im in the same boat (and same town ), Im considering a MSI K8T Neo-FIS2R which is socket 754 coupled with a 3200, As far as im aware its compatible, but like I say, im new to AMD also being a pentium fan!
If you meant an actual 2.4 GHz frequency then you've only got one choice, the Athlon 64 FX53 (oh mama!). With this chip I'd recommend the MSI K8N Neo2 board. Now if you were just looking for P4 2.4 GHz performance I'd say your safe with any of the AMD 64 chips. If you go with a 754 socket chip, I'd recommend the Neo in place of the Neo2
754 and the 3700 are an unbeatable combination, there have been some great results from that combo. IIRC the Epox is one of if not the best 754 mobo.
What I would suggest is: MSI K8N Neo Platinum and a 3200+ Get some decent cooling, some decent ram and overclock a bit and you save yourself money No budget at all or is there?

I've got a MSI K8 Neo Platinum mainboard with an Althon64 3400+ and PC3200, it's a great combo performance-wise but I'm warning you. For the life of me, I can't get Windows XP Pro to work. I've had to use 2000 to get it up and running.
3200+ is clocked at 2.2Ghz And if there isnt a budget then for cooling get something like: Asetek Vapochill Lightspeed GPU: Sapphire X800 Pro Toxic (overclocks beyond XT PE speeds, and again you save yourself money ) Hard drive: 2x WD 36.7 Gb in Raid 0 2x Seagate Barracude 7200.7 200Gb Case: Lian-Li PC60 Ram: OCZ Platinum Limited Edition 2x512 (If you can't find this then get some of that corsair DVD CD/Rom drive: Find a good one yourself ;-) Powersupply: Antec TruePower CPU: 3200 1Mb cache (make sure its 1meg) Motherboard: MSI K8N Platinum nForce3 250 (Socket 754) Soundcard: Creative Audigy2 etc, etc Anything else you need just ask! Oh and these are only my suggest, you could change these things if you dont like em
ok can someone tell me where I can get a 3200+ or 3400+ with 1mb cache I've been looking on aria.co.uk but they dont seem to do 1meg
my current set up athlon xp 2700+ (333FSB) (2.1Ghz) 1GB DDR 333 Will I even notice a perforance differance?
There are 4 AMDs with a frequency of 2.4 GHz...two for socket 754 ( Newcastle 3400+, 3700+), two for socket 939 (3800+, FX-53). In both cases, the difference between the two processors is cache size. The FX-53, however, has an unlocked multiplier, making it more OC friendly. The 3400+ is by far the cheapest; usually <65% of the price of the others.
So what Do you people think then? tbh i think £500+ just for a CPU is stupid. Is it worth getting a 64 bit system?
Im now thinking about a mobo with PCI express on it, so im off to look at some more mobos now, still need to know if its worth getting this stuff.
Go with socket 939 not 754. The athlon 3500+ can be had for about £230. Asus and Abit already have K8T800 boards out, and more are on the way with nforce chipsets and PCI-E. Should be out within the next month or 2 i would have thought.
I agree... get a socket 939 but get a 3800+... they outperform even the 3.4 EE in many cases. Also the prices have been going down vary fast, and it supports dual channel DDR which the socket 754s don't. If you go with that I would suggest a Gigabyte nForce 3 Ultra board (kinda pricy but worth it) or a K8T800 Pro Asus... both are great boards and support AGP as for socket 754, the 3700+ is great, but not owth it if you have enough for a 3800+, which will indeed make a huge performance difference over your current system On a side note, I really don't think that PCI-Express is really worth the wait, especially since then best cards arn't even out yet, and may not be for a while. Even still I really don't think that It will make much difference anyways in game and such.
Yea, id get the 3800 if i could afford it, but the 3500 is tempting. Its half the price, and with decent watercooling it should be possible to get 2.4ghz out of it. So you would have a 3800 (which is exactly the same as the fx53 except the cache, but it can more than hold its own with it) for about £230. I cant see it being too long before there are 939 3600's an stuff. They might just do a 3500 with 1mb cache for it or something. Then the o/c would be really fun. (This is all speculation of course )
