I've always just added a flat sum, deppendent on who I'm building for.
You need to decide whats a fair amount.

I'd say fixed rate for building a PC. Also, make it reasonable but not too cheap, cause if they think they can get everything dirt cheap they'll take advantage. :thumb:

most techs I know charge $150 to $200 just to put it together, you have to charge more if you have to go buy the parts.

Hmmm, I charge for the components but in addittion to that I have a builders fee which is a variable, means tested, flat rate (being the little socialist I am those who can afford it pay those that can't trade). For people who have jobs/can afford it I usually charge a fee of between £50 and £75 for a basic build and software install (the more software the higher the charge).

For mates/family it depends on what they can afford, if its a £200 bog standard special then a case of beer/a couple of bottles of good wine/computer spares/service of some kind (usually a trip somewhere) is the usual payment. If it's £400-600 worth of kit then I usually ask for £25-50 again dependant upon how much software they want installed. For a custom build with watercooling (i.e. pre-overclocked gaming rig, fitting of a watercooling kit, etc) I usually charge 10% up to £120 depending on what they want done.

    Hope this helps you :thumb:

I've only built a computer for a freind and I did it for free ( he bought the parts), so I can't help you there. If I were to charge, maybe $50 after the parts.

i'd ask for £20 for anybody that is nobody to me, or i'd do it for a pint for friends. I dont know how people could charge £100 for building a computer... id feel way guilty (since it really, basically is just buying the right components, and putting stuff in whichever hole it will fit).

People manage to get stuff for free atm... Have built a few, re-installed and adviced on a fair few without payment.
Will start asking soon, as doing stuff for others means you're tech support if stuff goes wrong.

I usually charge $50 for the build, or $80 if I'm loading it up with an OS + other software and tweaking it. Loading XP and updating takes a while.

Firstly it is a risk - you're asking me to handle sensitive electronic stuff that isn't cheap. If i break it, i'm gonna have to replace it out of my own pocket. Second, you're paying for someone's knowledge of what works together. Putting it together is 1/5th of the work, IMO.

Close friends / Family obviously not £100, but for friend of a friend, or whatever, sure - £100 please, and it'll usually work out cheaper than PC World, or a better spec for the same price.

20-30% of the price of the parts is what I would do, but you could decide to do like a flat $100-$200 for building. Charge by the hour, probably $50-$70 for repair and service ;)

i tend to charge 10% to 15% of the cost for parts depending of how much they can afford and how many other things i have to do with my time.
