Project Parabox Started: End of 2003. http://photobucket.com/albums/v413/koda/Modding/Parabox/ Unfortunately I didn't have my digicam back when I started the mod so no pics until I started working on the lcd. VFD: The VFD was originally purchased from america from a small electronics shop (originally came from old medical equipment), pretty much bare of everything except the technical docs. I wired it up to my com port and then attempted to write some software for it, Ifailed. I found that the company had held a small comp for software designers to write code to drive the unit but since only around 20 were ever sold it was a small comp. I eventually got it working perfectly, later which I adopted the program LCDC to drive it. Its mounted in my cases side window by 4 screws. LCD: I ontained a thrustmaster psone lcd from cashies after seeing cases such as 10ghz blackmagic with envious eyes. And it helps for leeching at lans. It runs off a PCI Matrox G200 vid card with a blistering 84.5mhz!! I went about pulling the LCD apart and splicing a vga cable into its input Success! After I set the timings for it in powerstrip it can run at 720x568 or 640x480. On the test mount it fit perfectly. LCD Eye Candy: Bay Hider: Built out of the back of an old optical drive, its purpose is to hide all the wires from the lcd. Stealthed blacklit optical drive: This part of the project was a spur of the moment genious idea, it involved glossing the stealth drive perspex plus lighting it up with a neat-o pattern. I googled for an awesome looking pattern and found one that looked great, only problem was that only half of it looked great, so I photoshopped it to by symmectrical and went about completing this. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v413/koda/Modding/Parabox/Stealthed Drive/IMGP2053.jpg ===================== <-mount for the optic drive. ============= <- back light grabber over pattern. The masking tape goes between this and the mount ^^^^ ============================ <- front perspex with pattern I put a small gap hider over the space between the pattern and the lcd where the led light came though. Case Spray: Cheap can spray, bad idea.... It looks good aslong as you dont look to close =P Looks quite nice when the ccfls are on though, kind of like matt silver. I seem to be missing the pics of the actual applying of the silver, so you ony get primer shots. A close up, it seems to scratch really really easily =( Might need to touch up that little bit. Perspex Spray: As suggested by Michael999, to help combat dust behind perspex pannels on a black background (which looks terrible) I should try spraying the back of the front perspex. I ended up spraying it with gloss acrylic black, the reflectiveness of the front spex was increased 100x, sweet. I lost my blue led light effect though =`(. I tried filling the holes with flour to stop the paint to them, but that just made a horrible mess. I settled with sugar in the holes, worked perfectly. Finished Product: Well, I think that about coveres it all, or as much as I can remember.
ive got a 15'' laptop lcd here, how the hell do i wire it up (to s-video/VGA?) Thanks! nice mod btw!!
Great job from the land of Oz. Your cat is awesome, I want you to know that. If you don't mind, I think I'll probably copy that image of it looking (rather perplexed) at your LCD.
So, what is it with cats & modders? Sometimes it seems like at least a third of the modding projects posted here have a cat involved - or several cats! Great project, turned out really nice.
hey it looks like ur front lcd temp is in celsius i have an Xdreamer2 with the exact temp lcd i was just wondering if its possible to change it to celsius as im in canada and fahrenheit makes less sense to me.. and by the way excellent mod ive been wanting a psone lcd forever now
THere is an artical somewhere that states Cats are considered a computer geeks main accessory. Scientificly proven. GO figure... I'll hunt it down, my roommate has it somewhere.
I'd love to see that! I'm currently catless - I move too much - but always had cats growing up. </thread hijack> The kitten peering into the box reminded me of the Infinite Cat Project's pictures.
Nice to see another Australian modder on the forums, an Atomican none the less Nice case you got there, and as everyone has said that is quite a cool pic of the cat looking at the LCD.
The article is called The Jargon File. Its about hacking and things. Here's a Link: http://www.catb.org/jargon/html/index.html The Information in in Appendix B, A Portrait of J. Random Hacker, in the miscellaneous section, linked directly here: http://www.catb.org/jargon/html/miscellaneous.html Hope this helps, and, i am a cat person.
Good mod and all, but its 2 years old! Stop digging up old threads just to beat them with a shovel. sweet mod, nice cat, etc..
