    Not sure I would be happy to carry that around, USB sticks are so easy to loose

    I'd rather go with a eSATAp (powered) adapter ($6 from china) and a regular SSD. Some of the SSD PCB's take up such a small space that you could easily hack it into something much smaller than a standard 2.5" case.

    If you need compact then make sure you have a smartphone with a removable battery, the battery compartment is usually big enough that you can use it to store one or more extra microSD cards.
