I'm not sure how long your head has been in the sand... but the 280 GTX hasn't been able to match the X2 in pretty much any benchmark, in any game, especially at higher resolutions and with AA cranked up. Heck, even Bit-Tech's review of the X2 shows the 280 GTX trailing behind. Don't let your fanboy epeen get in the way of facts.

Of course, for those too lazy... here's a list of benchmarks of the X2:

(the list goes on for quite awhile)

Tweaktowns crysis bench -> Under Crysis we can see that the GTX 280 continues to outperform the new HD 4870 X2. Adding a second X2 into the mix unfortunately has a slightly negative effect on the performance, which is disappointing.

The bit-tech 280 trialing? Crysis again shows the 280 with 4fps min better, only losing out by 1.2fps avg

It's closer than you make it sound.

If Crysis is all you've got to throw down as your "end all" then it's a laughable argument.

    Bit-tech
    World in Conflict
    2560x1600, 2xAA, 16xAF, DX10, Very High Detail

280 has 1fps more min, and 0.2fps higher avg, fess up, they are pretty even.

edit: ow and ATI are not Canadian.

Ageed but Zotac pay extra for the silicoln to enable these speeds as do other vendors so being able to get to these speeds with ref designs will be very hard to achieve.
Also its not just Zotac that are struggling on 280's its everyones problem due to it being Nvidia to blame, same goes for the 9800gtx+ series the yeilds are so low on the GTX+'s that BFG have had to EOL there OC2 and OCX product until further notice.

As for which is better the 4870x2 wins hands down yes nvidia has physx but ATI's 4870x2 at higher resolutions can outperform a 280gtx by upto 30-40% on some games and yet at the moment crossfire isnt great at scaling but as soon as the drivers mature then they will also own the multi card benchmarks.
And for people that moan about ati drivers i suggest you find out the most common reason for windows error reports (** 30% of all errors are nvidia drivers **).

As for sales the 4870x2 is far more sought after than the nvidia 280 so must be something in it :) .
