As it says on the tin really. I've tried playing 4K through the TV itself on some high end SONY models and the video jitters like crazy. Maybe it's asking too much but I'd love to get a 40 Inch 4K TV that can playback 4K content via a USB Flash Drive. Any pointers much appreciated.

The main problem is getting the data off the usb fast enough for the TV to process.
4k video needs huge amounts of bandwidth

4K x265 content is generally 25-35mbit/s, which is hardly taxing from a USB transfer standpoint.

Get yourself a cheaper 4K tv plus a Minix Neo-U1 android TV box. I don't have a 4K tv, but it decoded and downscaled 4K @ 25mbit like a champ, using the built in XBMC app.

My sony 4k handles 4k fine and looks stunning, mines kd49x8005
The entire TV runs on android so no need for extra box's

Tv needs to support USB 3.0 to get close to the bandwidth. 25mbit per second is alot more bandwidth than you might think. Not every USB stick is made equal. Just cause it says usb 3.0 does not mean the device will actually do the speeds advertised.

zdnet did a test on such things 3 of the 4 drives failed usb 3.0 speed and could bearly deliver 2.0 read / write. Which is not enough for 4k content.

    http://www.zdnet.com/article/usb-2-0-and-3-0-in-the-real-world/ link to some tests.

The scandisk drive is true 3.0 as you can tell by its read and write speeds. 20 seconds vs 12minutes.

It really isn't. It's just over 3MB/s which isn't very much at all. I would expect the read speed of any USB 2.0 drive/stick to be above that.
