i recently was given an old dell latitude CPx. it has a pentium 3 processor, 128mb of ram, and a 7.44gb hardrive with about 700mb free!
the stickers on it say it was designed for windows nt/98, somehow it's running xp but very slowly. What alternate operating can i install that will run quickly? i was thinking an older edition of ubuntu? the laptop will mainly be used for internet and possibly downloads via an external hardrive although this is not essential. any ideas?

The GUI does, but using the alternate/text based install lets you use the command line version.

I have a similar set up (P3, 512Mb RAM, 20GB HDD) running 8.04 at an equivalent speed to XP on faster machines. You can get a cheap 256Mb stick for around £10 off ebay
