Looks like they dropped the other 2 shoes.

    Nice one Amazon :D

The 1Ds3 looks like a bit of a beast though, 21.1MP at 5fps. :jawdrop:

well if you need more then 5fps, there is the 10mp Mk III. Still, 21 isn't something to sneeze at. Oh Nikon, where art thou?

This part - $7,999.99 - concerns me though. I makes me worried about the price point for the next pro body from Nikon.

think i'll give this one a skip though, and head for the 50D after this.

    Perhaps these new sensors?

Yeah, it's wild speculation. But it's fun nonetheless.

I bought a 30d a few days ago, and I managed to get the last one this particular store had in stock. The clerk told me that they weren't getting any more in, so I figured Canon were about to drop a new product. Looks like I was right.

The 40d isn't full frame is it? Looks far smaller than the 1Ds on Akihbara and in true Aki fashion, doesn't give me the details I want. :(

I'm confused because they have lumped the **** 18-55 lens on the promo-pics but without being full frame is it even worth buying over a 400d? Is a 3200 ISO and sRAW worth it? What's the memory capacity if it's 6.5fps? ninja edit: 75 jpegs (what res?) so pretty large.

    No, it's APS-C.
40D looks like an incremental upgrade over 30D rather than a dramatic improvement but build quality etc. should be far better than the 400D.

Nope, DIGIC III sensor at 10.1MP. It's the same size (body-wise) as the 30D as far as I know.

It's absolutely worth buying over the 400D, as is the 30D to be honest. Larger cameras are so much easier to use, and the general ergonomics of the xxD cams are a huge improvement over the xxxDs imho. That's 75 JPEGs at 10.1MP. Plus, it's not just being able to use ISO 3200, it's the ridiculously low noise of the new sensors. Basically, without sounding like I work for Canon :)worried:) the xxDs are just far better to use, and they make it easier up to actually taking the shot. Whether the image quality will be noticeably improved over the 400D I have no idea.

PS: it might be the new 18-55mm IS lens, so it's in their interests to show it off in the promo shots.

Ah. I'm assuming the 30d was a full frame then? I could check I spose, if I knew where.

That new lens still has the focus at the end = bad :(

    Google? :p Only the 5D & 1Ds2/1Ds3 are full-frame.

The ONLY reason I'd upgrade from a 350d is for full frame though, so this seems almost pointless.

    Get a 5D then :p

There's more than just full-frame that's worth upgrading for.
Also the 40D has that snazzy stuff on the screen that the G7 has, like live preview and a live histogram.

mate, fullframe is waaaaaaaaaay overrated - places a bigger demand on the lenses you use and that's about it.

and there are plenty more reasons to upgrade - the camera becomes much more of a tool in your hands. you have to actually use one to appreciate it though.

That's my thought. I recognize that there are other benefits in the xxD and xD lines over my 400D, but spending $1300 for a wheel and another step of ISO (which I rarely touch, tbh) just seems insane to me when I'm still keeping a 1.6x crop. But as Fod says, you have to use the higher-end models and I've only used my 400D.

Live view is pretty much worthless to me, though a live histogram would be cool.

I just bought a new camera recently. I almost went with the 400D, but I was willing to trade the small drop in megapixels for the increased frame rate of the 30D. I like to shoot sports, so 5 fps was a big selling point. The body also felt more comfortable in my hands.

Apart from those two points, the 30D and 400D are almost the same camera.

Thing is, there is really little you can do to improve on a Canon 350D (as the 400D shows), or the 30D. Unless you buy a Nikon D80 perhaps, and that is more a personal YMMV preference, than a cold logical choice. Digital SLRs have really come along in the last years...

Dude, there are far better reasons to upgrade before full frame becomes a consideration. The 30D and obviously the 40D are far superior cameras in many ways and no doubt the 50D will be even better :)

Fod/Rich - after using a 5D full frame with an L lens it's the ONLY thing worth considering imo, even if a nice new low noise/self cleaning CCD is good it's not worth the upgrade cost alone for a 1.6x crop. If you're spending several grand on a body, the budget should be there to spend it on appropriate lenses too.

If you're going for an xxD OR xxxD then obviously you're still open to choice, but I'd find it a hard justification to upgrade to another crop. I spose if I didn't have really lenses then possibly, but I'd rather go all out on something that will last.
