Hi - I need to get 3V from a 5V power source. I had originally planned on using a LM317, but now I just realized that LM317s require a minimum difference of 3V between the input and output, so that isn't an option. I believe current is somewhere along the lines of 30-50ma, but that is definitely not an exact number, and it's possible that current consumption will vary with usage, so it absolutely cannot be considered to be constant. So - any suggestions? I was looking at an ADP667 (http://www.analog.com/en/prod/0,,766_818_ADP667,00.html) - and it looks to me like it should be able to do it, provided that I'm reading the datasheet correctly.

LD1117V30 is a 3V 800mA LDO reg from ST, fairly cheap over here. Quick google shows it at Mouser, and Rapid & RS do it in the UK.

You might get away with the 317T, I've found loss is 1.5V-1.75V, but it's still a bit tight. Not checked with the 317.

    There's also a LD1117V33, same thing, 3.3V.
