Have you people seen this? http://www.maushammer.com/systems/dakotadigital/DakotaDigital.html http://www.maushammer.com/systems/dakotadigital/lcd.html It seems pretty cool to me. I have not intention to become a professional photographer so 1.1MP should actually be enough for me. I mean, I probably won't even be printing pictures (probably just for taking pictures of mods I'm doing) so if it can nearly fill up my desktop resolution that's great for me. Definitly something I wouldn't be against spending ~$25 on. The real problem is shipping. I live in Canada and I've never seen these things around stores here. They can be ordered online but my dad doesn't like that idea.
Seems a hell of an effort for a digital camera. The whole disposable digital is a ridiculous idea which seems to have taken our throwaway society a step too far. I'm no environmentalist but this quite frankly makes me sick. However, if you're prepared to put the effort in you do end up with a megapixel camera for a few bucks, but is it worth it? Surely you could pick up a much better, and hassle-free digicam second hand. Check ebay for starters (though if your dad doesn't like buying online from stores he'd probably have a heart attack at the thought of buying second-hand unguaranteed products from strangers....)
It is pretty stupid, for sure. But I don't think they're actually being thrown away at all. When you give it back to them, they get you a CD with the pictures and then sell the camera to somebody else. Unless you actually mod the camera, I think the whole thing would be a scam. Well, I'll have to see about that. And here I was so looking forward to having a cheap camera like that...
I have one of these cameras that I take camping with me, because I don't care if it gets destroyed. I found a hack for the firmware that lets it use up all the picture memory(it can actually hold about 110 pictures). even though it is 1.1 megapixles, it is a fixed focus camera with a really crappy image sensor. this means that the images are often blurry and streaky. I'll upload some pics that I took with the camera to show you what i mean. also, because it is fixed focus, it cant take pictures of stuff closer than about 1.5 meters. I wouldn't recommend actually using this camera for taking decent shots because, the saying "you get what you pay for" defiantly applies here.
Fair point, though there's probably a limited number of times you can resell a camera before it looks second-hand and has to have the casing etc replaced. Though if I'm gonna start getting all uppity about green IT issues maybe I should start with the more prolific abusers such as AOL et al and those damned freebie CDs! (Or I could at least start recycling more....) Ah well, back on topic.... Having seen some of the pics on those websites it does look like the image quality is fairly poor - but again it's down to what you consider acceptable.
