Hey guys, I'm looking for an external HDD. I not sure if its best to buy:

    a) A complete external HDD, like the WD MyBook 500GB
    b) An internal drive and an external cover, like the Samsung SpinpointT 500GB + IcyBox

It would be desirable if the drive had power saving features, so it won't die very quickly. Gimme a shout if you've owned an external HDD, or can recommend me any. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

When I sold my desktop and switched to a lappy, I kept the 400GB WD and stuck it in an enclosure. Works well enough, but the caddy is just a cheap chinese job - the fan in it started whining after a few months...

TBH, I'd just go with a prebuilt solution. The main computer stores seem to always have some kind of offer on external drives.

Will you be running it 24/7 or just turn it on when you need it? (The free agent pro's are definitely the way to go, or the WD versions of) I was just curious.

Well, I was hoping for an external HDD which acted like an internal one. So it would spin up when needed (when reading/writing), and spin down when it isn't. This is cos the external drive is for data, but since I'm off to uni next month, I'm get to bring a lappy with the external HDD and keep my data with me :D
