ATI needed this, i think another line of bad cards would have caused them to go bust.

the 3850 saved ATI's ass, and now the 4870X2 is going to do nvidia in the ass!

these guys got a hold of one here- http://www.legitreviews.com/article/745/1/. i don't know how legit this guys are for sure, but its a nice preview.

with their test setup they hit 27 fps on crysis on very high, which is pretty impressive compared to the rest of the market. the thing i don't get is the pricing. supposedly it goes in 1gb and 2gb varieties, but the only price listed is 500. i would hope that its for the 2gb version, it'd be a shame if the 1gb "low end" card was that much. thoughts?

speaking of the power, i have read somewhere that it REQUIRES a steady motherboard, to supply its required load power, since it requires full 75w from the PCIe slot.

so PCIe 2.0 is definately recommended for this card.

just out of curiosity Toaster...what do you hit on 3dmark06 at default settings. I'm just curious what a dual-core can do at 4.4GHz.

But what your forgetting is this 4780X2 is two 4870 cores....
The GTX280 is still the fastest single core GPU out there by a long way, and im sure nvidia could come back at ATI with a GTX280GX2
Im no Fanboy but you cant really compare a Single core GPU with a dual Core GPU, you need to compare them on a level playing field.
IE test the 4870X2 with SLI GTX280 or if it happens a GTX280GX2

Yeah, but lets face it...the real comparison here is CASH. The fact is that when NVidia comes out with their X2 solution, the sucker is going to be 700 bucks, be able to heat a home in winter time, and probably flop like the 9800GX2. And, then of course you have a whole different set of problems if you tried to Quad-SLI that sucker.

Phwoar! That's going to swallow a lot of power though. Why pay more on a 1KW+ when you can keep your old PSU and buy a cheap 350W to power you 4870x2! Is that even possible..?

OK, lets look at this graph...Obviously the 4870X2 is sucking alot of power. But, the question is what will happen when the G280 is doubled up making a theoretical 280GX2. The GTX appears to be the LOWEST, but who's concerned with Idle power...I'm interested in LOAD power. THe HD4870 is lower on that Stat, so even though the 4870X2 is consuming alot of power. The fact is that is the HD4870 is 276 + 276 = 552, and since we see that the X2 is at 423 it is running more efficient than two cards 192watts less . Now take into consideration that the GTX280 is 296 at LOad, so that is 296 + 296 = 592, now lets be generous and say that Nvidia can be as efficient. THat would put the theoretical 280GX2 at 463....and thats being generous. Nvidia users better hope that they put 55nm chips on that sucker... oh, yeah ATI already announced the conversion to 45nm chips with the new change in CEO.

those figures are taken from the whole systems power usage including CPU, RAM etc so it isnt just a case of doubling the wattage.

gtx280 will NEVER be doubled up. stop imagining things!

8800GTX was a superb card with a rather large die, it is imposible to double G80 on a dual slot solution because of the heat output.
gtx280 is the same story, it is a shockingly large die, so unless they want you to use it as a heater, they 'll never make a gtx280x2.

there is a die shrink version of gtx280 comming out, apparently with GDDR5 and higher clock rate in September, that's probably going to be the competitor for 4870x2.

Is it just my imagination or is not the 9800GX2, your lovely card (8800GTX) times 2. Pretty sure thats why everyone was dissapointed, they didn't do anything except double it. NO die shrink.

Hodgy100....AGP is no longer..Sempron...lol...I don't even want to be rude so I will leave it at that.

lol, have you been under a rock?

    8800GT, 8800GTS 512MB, 9800GTX, 9800GT and 9800Gx2 are all based on G92 core. the G92 core is a dieshrink and crippled version of G80.

G92: 128 shader pipelines, 256bits memory bus width
G80: 128 shader pipelines, 3**something bits memory bus width
clock-for-clock, G80 is a lot faster. this is why everyone was disappointed with all G92 products bar 8800GT, which was amazingly cheap
