Mate of mine is building a rig and it keeps freezing/hanging it won't even load windows when the i5's onboard GPU is used ( gets half way then BSOD) have a look see what you think ....yes its a bad photo but from the top left pin go 12 pins to the right and 5 down it looks like a break in the socket because all the pin heads seem to be in the right place https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B155ERFbo8zuLU9UODFjZ01xUnc/edit Download an zoom in
it does look like a crack, have you tried to see if there is something there? use a toothpick and gently run it between the pins to see if it moves
just taken better pictures an I think the socket is fine can't see any bent pins myself https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B155ERFbo8zubmJ6bTZQLVhQdEE/edit https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B155ERFbo8zubEhzM0RrMEt3ZmM/edit RichCreedy REP + for looking
Last two pictures look fine to me. Guessing there hasn't been any overclocking on the chip at all? Also, am I right in assuming that boot is fine when using a 'proper' GPU?
No OC... its a brand new CPU and Motherboard and RAM Tested the ram in my rig and its fine...stuck my ram in his rig and it was still the same GPU is ruled out because it can't install windows without it half way into the windows install he gets this without GPU (don't look good) https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B155ERFbo8zuQ09tNHZfUjdzdGM/edit it will install windows with a proper GPU but hangs after a while or during windows update PSU ruled out its a week old and worked fine with his old rig SSD same as above We have set up on a box out of the case right now and its just died again so that rules out shorting on the case LOL what's the betting the retailer who will remain nameless will say user error bent pins?
If the kit is brand new, I'd suggest RMA'ing it, saying that it won't boot. Is there another compatible mobo that you can use to test the CPU, just to make sure the mobo is at fault?
nope I am not willing to take my rig apart for my mate lol He's just gonna tell them whats going on and RMA them both to the retailer
