Have you tried running it in safe mode, or via the command line? Using it in the command line should hopefully give you an error message that will help us work out what is wrong.

defraggler or Auslogistics defrag are good. The one for vista takes 10-12hours on my pc.. pan in the rear!

I tend to use JKDfrag which has just had a nice upgrade and name change; MyDefrag. Not a fan of the name change myself but the software is just as good if not better than before.

I've also used Auslogistics and it seems to work well. Always difficult to tell with defragging whether it's truly doing the job well or not.

I tried the MS one that comes with Win 7 today.
Firstly it said that there was no de-fragmentation after analysing then when run it said it had de-fragmented some of the drive.
Completely confused I downloaded defraggler (another great free utility from Piriform) it found 80 fragmented files and proceeded to defrag the drive from 44% to 23% with only 2 large files fragmented.

    I did that today.

It said after analyzing, there was no fragmentation.
Defraggler said there was quite a bit of fragmentation.

Defraggler wins for me, basically everything piriform makes is pretty epic in my opinion.

I use Auslogics and I find it quite good, especially since I have +300GB of data and it takes roughly 3 hours.
