I can say under rather embarresed that in my 4 and half years as a member on this forum the furthest i've gone with overclocking is to use the onboard aid on the guru lien of motherboard to rise a p4 3.4 to 3.8. Now with some new components on the way. q6600 and 4gb of Corsair TwinX XMS2, DDR2 PC2-6400 CAS 5-5-5-18, i feel it's only fair to the 6600 to put in some real work and try and get as close to 3.0 on air as i can.
Firstly, i've never burnt in a cpu or ram, and never really heard much about it. After a long google session, there seems to be many ways to do this. I was wondering what people with experionce such as the bit tech community would recommend, along with any risks, reasons and drawbacks to burning in a cpu.

    Sorry for all the questions.

    isn't it just stress testing??

being a gamer, i basically put Prime and ATI Tool both to stress test the CPU and GPU for 1 night, while logging temperature with Rivatuner.

As Wuyanxu said, Prime95 for a while to settle the TIM. Coretemp is also good for measuring CPU temperatures.

As for reaching 3GHz on air, You have a P35 motherboard and an Arctic cooling Freezer Pro 7 - simply change the FSB to 333.

Et Voila - 3GHz on Air. Eeeeasy.

3ghz, on air is very easy with the Q6600 and P35 chipset, i'm a complete novice and i managed it! one thing i will say though is see if you can undervolt yours it will make it so much cooler, mine came to me set to 1.3 and i can get a fully stable at 3 with 1.22 and fully stable at 3.2 with 1.27 both under the 1.3 it was set to default and the temps drop dramatically, mine went from 77/78 on teh diode under load to 61/62 at 3.2, at 3 i hardly ever broke 60, all these temps are under quad priming...

CPUBurnin for testing your chip and mem test + for your ram both can be run independent of your os.

depends on the CPU, my VID comes at 1.325, and it needs 1.4Vcore in BIOS to get 3.2Ghz 400x8 stable, and needs nearly 1.6v in BIOS, 1.48v in Windows to get it 3.6Ghz stable. horrible Vdroop, but still managed 3.8Ghz psudostable with my setup :)

Prime95 has the advantage over many stress-testers in checking if your cpu can still get the sums right under stress.

btw, there's a new Prime95 version that will autodetect how many cores you have and set a stress test up on each, saves the messing with the -An switches.

Be aware, this program will determine how good your heatsink is; get CoreTemp running first and watch like a nork. :worried:

Hay all gone through the stress test fine. Im registering about 35 idle and about 48 max on prime.

One thing, two of the cores are about 3/4 degress hotter than the other two consistantly. Is this normal? or could it be a contact problem on the headsink etc??
Either way is it anything to worry about? dont really fancy taking the fan back out. It wasent that easy to fit on the motherboard.
    thanks

that's normal. 4deg is normal. i get as large as 10deg (re-sitting TRUE with washers this weekend)

you've got lots headroom, try 3.2Ghz or higher?

yep im gonna start he oc'in now, will let ya know how it goes. Its just a matter of increasing the fsb on a intel chip aint it..?

Right not going too well unfortunatly. I can get it running stably at 311, at 2.8. And after 30 mins on prime temp is on 49 max...?

but if i move it to 322 it wont boot. ?

it could be volts. not sure which setting is which. in core temp. The VID: 1.3250v but in abit eq. i've got cpu core voltage at 1.14 v and cpu vtt voltage at 1.18..

im bit confused really. Im gonan run prime for a full hour on 311. just to make sure.

Other than that i have a passive cooled 6600gt. 520 corsair hw. 4gb corsair 6400 800.. any ideas? would really like to reach 3.0 if pos.

    thanks

    I',m on 1.35V @ 3GHz - 1.14V won't be able to cut it I don't think.

switched some bits round, running 3.1 currently seems stable. core temp registers 50 on prime95. at 100%

volt still 1.3250 on core temp.

Anyone used this abit eq. it has diff volt readings to core temp. says my cpu core voltage it 1.25. does it set it auto?

got to 3.2 stable on 3.45 max core temp 52.

thik i'll stick with this for now. These chips dont half fly!

well done, 3.2Ghz is enough for anything really.

i've just re-arranged all my fans + 2 new fans bought on this forum and re-sitted thermalright Ultra120 extreme. looking to get 3.6Ghz stable and running 24/7 soon :)
