Does anyone see any issue with using the components in my post signature below with a i7 6700K 4.0Ghz, MB MSI Z170A GAMING PRO CARBON set up? My RAM is DDR3 - 12G not 6G.

    Responses would be greatly appreciated.

    Kind Regards,

    Andrew.

    :)

The MSI board you have selected uses DDR4. There are some Skylake boards that support DDR3L but since you have triple channel DDR3, I would upgrade to dual channel DDR4 when you upgrade. I don't see any issues with the rest of your other components though :)

Probably worth upgrading to an SSD at this point too if budget allows.

Thank you very much Lancer. I will be upgrading in stages and the CPU and MB are the first. Do you think DDR3 will be an issue to use for a couple of months ?:eyebrow:

You'll have to find a board that uses DDR3L or has both DDR3L and DDR4 slots (they're not interchangeable) for future proofing. There are some out there I think but I cant remember any specific models off the top of my head sorry.

Also, if I'm understanding your current RAM setup correctly, you could only use 4GB or 8GB out of your 12GB. You'll also have to check your RAM voltage, I think it'll need to be 1.5v.

My guess would be that the Dominator RAM uses 1.65V rather than the JEDEC standard 1.5V. Please correct me if I'm wrong though. And given Skylake really should be used with 1.35V or below, I personally wouldn't use the existing RAM even on a DDR3L board. All it would take would be a weaker than usual IMC and poof, brand new CPU dead in the water (worst case scenario obviously, IMC's tend to be pretty hardy nowadays, but you might as well get as much longevity out of your new stuff as possible).
