    Hi folks,

I'm planning to buy a new rig (core i7 platform). Together with triple channel 1333mhz or 1600mhz DDR3. The question now is do i need to overclock the cpu in order to get these ram speeds? like previously with x48 cpu runs at 1333 but ram runs at 1600 so system (fsb) runs at 1333 its not 1 on 1, or you need to overclock the cpu if i am not mistaken, or get a extreme cpu that runs at 1600. Either way overclocking for now is not my thing.

    Some help / advise needed.

No, there is no problem with the FSB limiting the RAM speeds on the i7 proceccors

I honestly haven't worked this out yet. For some motherboards it seems that yes, you do need to overclock.

    With the 920 I have I need to set a 200MHz QPI for 1,600MHz, and 166 for 1333 memory.

133 limits you to 1066 or lower. This is with the Asus P6T on the 0804 BIOS and it looks the same for the latest 0903. It also seems that way for the MSI X58 Eclipse too.

I *think* 965 has more clock ratios that go positive, allowing for faster memory speeds without overclocking, but I have to check this further - not all BIOS' are that obvious.

Using the Nehalemcalc from icrontic.com it does show that you need a 200MHz BClock to use DDR3-1600, but I guess that's just for the boards that are out now. The P6T is a prime example.

    Thanks for the reply's guys,

To bad i cant use 1333 or higher memory until you have to up the 133 default clock speed.
