A/V creating high contast displays (an idea)

    so if you've ever taken apart a lcd monitor you know there's this white glowing thing in the back. i was wondering if you would be able to split this backlight pad into sections. let's say you have a video of a sunset in the ocean. ocean on the bottom, sky on the top. if you had a backlight split into 2 horizontal parts you could have the top part glow bright and the bottom glow dim. shouldn't be that hard to make right? so theorhetically you can have a lot of these independent backlight portions or even have one for every couple pixels. bright things would be bright, dark things would be dark. would this work?

    I believe that's the concept behind the new high dyanmic displays as seen here.
