What drives should he use for RAID? He would like 60GB HDDs. What should he do about RAM? He would like 1 GB. He doesn't game on PC; he is a DBA SQL Oracle. Is the motherboard good or should he get something else that has SATA/ATA RAID?
How about no RAID? Causes so many problems that its not worth the .015% faster performance. Trust me, ive done it.
Agreed. Trust me -- unless you're doing a RAID 1 for data recovery, it's not worth the hassle. Get 1GB of any value RAM (I like the Kingston ValueRAM, but that's just me. I've heard bad things about the Corsair value line, but couldn't tell you first hand), PC3200, and you'll be good to go. I would usually say get a better gfx card, but you said all he does is Oracle work? Guess it's not a biggie, then.
Ok, but he knows this and he still wants to give it a try. So, is that board ok or should he try something else?
How about having a wd raptor 74gb for windows/programs and a 200gb hd for everythign else that would be faster than the software raid
i agree (y) get a raptor and a storage hdd 80gb storage should do the trick.. although it depends what he whats to store on his pc. Maybe to make it cheaper he could keep the old one primarily as a storage hdd?
