According to Corsair's website, the CMX8GX3M2A1600C9 is 1.5v: http://www.corsair.com/cmx8gx3m2a1600c9.html.
but why does on my machine, that page shows: Product Description 8GB XMS Memory kit for dual channel systems, 1600MHz, 9-9-9-24, 1.65V
I assume that's standard JDEC (or whatever the acronym is - always forget) settings. So 1333MHz C9, and you need to set 1600MHz C9 (or lower) in the BIOS
Click on the tech specs page, it shows 1.5v SPD voltage, 1.65v tested voltage. I guess that for 1600 speed, you need to set it at 1.65v.
Bit-tech says no. http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/memory/2011/01/11/the-best-memory-for-sandy-bridge/1 i find with Corsair RAM, you can usually get away with lower voltages. my XMS2 4x2GB set rated at 1.9v, ran at SPD standard 1.8v with advertised speed and timing no problem. my Dominators DDR3 4x2GB set rated at 1.9v for AMD systems, memtest passed 3 times ran at 1.55v rated 1600MHz 9-9-9-24 no problem. im expecting to run those XMS3 at 1600MHz 9-9-9-24 1.5v. pretty sure it's achievable because it's Corsair.
I wouldn't say so. But depends how far you push your overclock. 1600MHz is more than enough headroom for most overclocks though.
I'll stick with 12800 then, cheers. Hmmm, the next question is do I dare go for one of the 12GB bundles in 6x2 configuration. Would that be too much of a strain on the memory controller?
Sorry, whats your motherboard? Only motherboard I know that has 6 ram channels are skulltrail and the new xenon boards
Here's some 3x4GB! http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-107-GL&groupid=701&catid=8&subcat=1389 Cheapest price I could find on my quick search
Some people are today suggesting that prices will go down again after Chinese New Year (next week). Keep an eye on it.
I run a X58A-UD3R from Gigabyte. It has 6 DIMM slots in it, so I don't see why I couldn't run it, especially when the manual says it's fine. Am I confused here or are you?
I personally don't expect much price change, current price is pretty much the deep bottom of pricing. If you remember it, i think 1,5 years ago the prices were same as today - 2x2gigs DDR2 quality RAM (read brands like Corsair Dominators, Mushkin) for ~60-70 euros. Now we are at ~50-60 euros for 2x2gigs DDR3 quality RAM. Next big price drops will come when 8GB modules will start shipping. Of course there can be a small movement up and down, but nothing extraordinary. But maybe i am wrong and soon we will see 2x4GB for 50e .
Ram pricing is extremely volatile, prices change daily. It's been the trend for the last week to rise. I doubt it'll go down lower than it is now tbh - it's cutting margins too much.
