Double Qtek casemod I know, crappy name, but the concept rocks (yeah, I know, anybody who calls himself a modder can top this piece of modding, but hell, it's my first mod, and first somewhat nice idea ) What I will be doing I have these two identical Q-Tek cases, one my brother bought and another which my daddy bought the same day. They're both ugly as hell, but that'll change soon. It actually has changed already. Today I started cutting and drilling in the original cases, and I now have lots of trash, and a couple of usefull parts laying around in my room and the living room This is what I've done so-far: -- I started with those two, and made a simple photoshop (in MS paint ) to get a general idea of what i was going to do to those poor ugly cases Ripped off the front-panels of both cases Took off all the unnessecary parts of the front-panels and spitted the two parts of both fronts. Then I stripped the frame of both cases (this is just one ) And started taking these things out... Boooo-oooring, drilling out rivets I drilled just the right rivets to take off the bottom of one of the cases, and also removed the remaining part of the motherboard tray (the part with the I/O-panel hole and PCI/AGP (will be PCI-e for the other case soon) slots. (on this picture you can see a strange fanhole, which is the one my brother once made when he used this case. No he didn't put a shotgun to his fan and fired (which I would love to see once, a real shotgun casemod) he just isn't that good with the aviation shears) Later on I will show you what I was planning to do with the bottom of that case, but first: The front panels both had this treatment I did cut it out a bit wide to sand it to the right size, and perfectly flat to fit it to eachother And they will be fitted to eachother this way Next thing I want to do is cut out the window for my 5,4" LCD, but not today, coz' my daddy wants me to go back inside and prepare for the night (gotta work tomorrow nine till 5:30) so I will continue either tomorrow or anywhere coming week (don't know yet when I'll find the time to do it... maybe I'll try to get some days off coming week to work on this casemod) And this is the LCD I'll be fitting in quite soon Hope you like what I'm doing, comments are very welcome, as long as it doesn't concern the color of this case
Hi again loit! why would you keep the two floppydrives? Why don't you make the front entirely from baycovers? I also think that you can better fit the LCD elsewere, like on top, so you can put your case on the grond and still see the LCD. Or aren't the cases that long?
the case will be about 65 centimeters tall and I will keep the floppy drive bay, and perhaps mod something in what will be able to hold a cup of coffee, shooting out of that bay when you push the button making it all-baycovers is booooring I'm not desperately trying to be original, but I think this kind of layout hasn't been made that often... Anyhow: Don't have to work till saturday, so I think this'll speed up the modding process a bit
Small update Went to work this morning and arranged that I wouldn't have to work 'till saturday, got home, ate a bit, placed the order for my new hardware (yeehaa, payment is going out tomorrow, somewhere this week it'll arrive ) and after all that, started modding again... for a bit: I did cutout the frame for the LCD, as you can see drawn out on masking tape, and it went quite well Picture of the two fronts cut to fit the LCD (don't have a clue of how I'm gonna mount it tho' ) And a think I will be doing tomorrow or the day after... This is the most tricky bit... This will be the bottom half (more like third, or even quarter of the case (21cm of the total 63cm, allright, third ) doesn't matter) bottom part of the case, and it should be exactly high enough to make the two parts of the frontpanel come together nicely, and I will pop-rivet the original bottom back on right there "Why?" I can hear you ask... Well, mainly to just make it easyer to fit those two parts together This will take the most time, and most measuring which sucks, coz' when I measure wrongly, I'll **** up everything, and I will need to find a new donor-Qtek case Wish me luck, and please comment or share your ideas about this mod (it's my first mod, please help me get through this )
realized just now... getting this bottom plate riveted back on will be tough, mainly because of the stupid bends in the case where the I/O cover used to be... the steel there ain't flat, but bent in a straight corner, ****ing up my plans... but hell, nothing a dremel can't fix
Yep. Dremel on. Should be pretty interesting. But I can imagine a floppy would be good for the OC'er who sells working BIOS settings for people who can't overclock for themselves. Any ideas people. Money Money Money.
yeehaa, payment has come through, estimated delivering day: friday Hardware to-be-fitted in there: GigaByte GA-M55plus-S3G AMD CPU Athlon 64 X2 4200+ 89 Watt 2.2 GHz OCZ Memory EL Gold 1024 MB, PC6400, 800 MHz and an Arctic Freezer64 on top of that processor also ordered some meshX panel for the back of the bottom third of the case planning for today: File the plastic parts to the right size, measure their height and cut the metal frame to the right size to fit the front cover. I still have no idea of how to join these two front covers, but that'll come to me when the time is right Unfortunately, when the hardware parts arrive, I will probably immediately start to use this computer as main PC, and start modding my old pc Why? Because that mod will be way nicer
Another small update Finally cut the bottom frame to the right size This was quite difficult First I had to complete both the front-panels, measure them, see how much space there was left, and cut that off the front and rear panels. Then the back of this case looked like this... Quite ugly IMHO After a small ajustment it looked like this Because of all the mess on the back of the frame, I decided to just cut the rear with a minimal border, and when I get it next week, I'll put some meshX behind it Oh crap it looks nice The LCD mount will be made with some Alu I just bought, as the front-panel isn't straigt, and won't look nice with the LCD mounted bare behind it Next thing on my todo list is really attaching the bottom part of the case bought some corner thingies, but my father won't let me drill holes to attach it this late at night So I tried glueing the front-panels together, which worked More modding and pictures tomorrow Please don't hesitate to post some suggestions
I take it that this was a competition pro ps1 lcd? If it is, there is a black wire going to the board with the power/s-video etc, ive managed to remove this wire but dunno where from, could you take a photo and post it up for me please? Mods looking great! Think your overall size will be only a little bigger then my standard full tower, Yet yours looks sooooo much more rooomy

A very small update without pictures, as there is not much that has changed the look I got the bottom part in place now, and fastened it with some screws. I wanted to start modding the fanhole in the front a bit, but my daddy didn't let me, because of the noise, so I decided to drill out the bottom 5,25" trays, hate those nasty rivets, and turned it 'round, drilled new holes and fastened in place, so that now those bottom 4 trays can be used. Have to reinforce it a bit though, because it tends to bend a bit, when fully loaded. That's it for today, still got to see what I'll be doing next... finishing the LCD mount, or making the side panels...
haha this is great. u can stick some serious watercooling equipment at the bottom part. just make sure u stabilize that case with some wide feet or smth. really sweet reassembly, keep it up
damn, this thing looks bigger every time I look at it when I woke op this morning it looked huge Today I will start making the side panels I think. Lots of planning needed for those, deciding wether it'll be seperate panels for top and bottom, or just one sidepanel a side
That's where the black wire comes from (who wanted to know this? ) Took one of the sidepanels and altered it a bit with my tinsnips. After a while I had 3 blisters, 1 nasty cut (not visible on pictures ) and this mess And that There it wasn't finished yet, because the cut in my finger was stinging a bit So I finished my front panels, because that didn't require that much brute force And after some more cutting (the panels, not myself ) I had this... I still have to make those corners round, and put some tubing or whatever over it I'm absolutely not looking forward to cutting the second half of the sidepanel I hate tinsnips tho' love the result What to do tomorrow/very soon: - Make a frame for the LCD with some aluminium - Bought some putty, which I will be using to make those front panels one, and to clean up the edge of the LCD frame, and the holes below it, where the buttons once were Please share your thoughts about this projects!
there are many places you can connect it though, as it's just a cathode you're connecting to the main cathode. one of the black wires from that plug also is a cathode... or the three most left soldering spots, from the plugs
