Did a search for a domain name, it was free.
Talked to a friend about it for 10 minutes before registering it, then went to buy it and it was already taken.

Did not go to any other website, must have been caused by Easyspace somehow, unless someone has some other information.

You can imagine how unhappy I am about this service.

WTF? So someone bought a domain whilst you were talking to someone, big deal...

I was in the pay for it screen, went to hit the checkout and it was gone.
This is a big deal, means you are almost certainly gonna have trouble buying domain names unless you do search then buy instantly, and hope someone doesn't beat you there.

Ah right I see sorry...kinda screwed up, you'd think they'd have it reserved once you'd got to the checkout stage. 1&1 all the way tbh

The point I was making was someone actually knew I searched for it and deliberately bought it before I could.

The chances of someone finding the same name and buying it at the same time is almost impossible, someone must have the ability to see what people are trying to register.

    That is my main concern.

Try doing a whois on the domain, and see if easyspace is the registrar. If so complain to them, they may not be able to do anything, but at least they know what's happened.

I use easyspace, and can confirm they are rubbish. They tried to start charging me £5/mo for a catch all mailbox on my domain, which I had been paying £5/year for before! I complained though, and they left it at £5/year, w00t!

Isn't it more likely Easyspace reserved the name for you while you were in the process of buying it, then got confused by your delay?

tbh, I can't see any point in anybody buying up domains that somebody's expressed a slight interest in. If you want to squat, pick local small businesses that don't yet have a website or proper email addy. :naughty:

And coincidences do happen, all the time.

I'm with cpemma, they've probably reserved it for you. On the other hand it is possible that the place that told you it was available was wrong?

I wouldn't use them for hosting but their domain prices are hard to beat.

    Pwned. :)

Sounds like they do have it reserved and you need to figure out how to buy it from them. Shoot them a email if you can't figure it out.

it's easyspace (or whoever you searched through) found you searching and bought up all the domains, so you'd have to buy it for a thousand dollars or something. Well, that's my conspiracy theory.

Looks like there was an error in the easyspace site, it showed it as available, until I went to check out.

The domain name has actually been registered since 2004, so maybe they have some error buying domain names they have registered.

Can't get it to happen again anyway, so don't know what happened.
