My computer freezes for 5-30 seconds every 1-30 minutes where nothing responds to mouse clicks and the game music loops if playing a game for sometimes a minute. I am suspecting that it is the ICH9 SATA controller that is giving me the problem on my P5K Premium.

I have had numerous problems with hard drives and this motherboard, previously posted I had problems of getting my HD753LJ working with this mobo after sending the HD back to samsung 5 times I had decided to using Western Digital. This worked for about 8 months until I lost 2 partitions and freezes started to occur. I managed to recover the lost partitions using the data lifeguard tools on the hard drive. I also used WD diagnostics and had found errors on the hard drive but was not able to fix them when connected to the P5K Premium. I unplugged the hard drive and connected it to another machine and had successfully repaired the hard drive.

I did a fresh install with all the latest updates and drivers installed and I still get the freezes. I tried the hard drive on the other machine and I do not get freezes nor do I get the event viewer errors.

    Event Viewer shows Critical Error:
    Event ID: 11
    source: atapi
The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Ide\IdePort3.

I have unplugged all other drives apart from the WD 640GB Caviar Blue, tried different SATA cable, also tried it in different SATA ports and the errors still appear but with different IdePort numbers.

I have come to the conclusion that the chipset ICH9 SATA controller on this motherboard is faulty, but I would appreciate if someone can confirm this theory as I do not wish to send back the motherboard to have the manufacturer/retailer check it then charge me £32.95+VAT for just looking at it.

I also have another query in regards to ASUS and ebuyer.

I contacted ebuyer in regards to this query and as I had opened a Business Account with them they would not accept any warranty issues in regards to ASUS motherboards as their terms and conditions say that they are only responsible for the first 28 days after purchase, it is ASUS's responsibility after that.

In the contrary, ASUS website states that all motherboards purchased after 1/11/99 come with a 3 year warranty and in the UK it is the retailers responsibility to honor the warranty.

I have sent a technical query to ASUS asking them this.. but what do I do in this situation, it looks like everyone is washing their hands on this one.

Does your mobo have a secondary SATA controller? Usually the ports are another color than the rest. On my P5Q Pro they are white and yellow while the others (controlled by the southbridge) are red.

You could try them to see if it is the MHC at fault.

The other SATA controller is the MICRON SATA Controller and that controls the EIDE and external SATA.

The HD753LJ that I previously had problems with would not run at all on the ICH9 but it ran successfully with no problems through the external sata MICRON SATA port.

I've plugged the Western Digital WD 640GB Caviar Blue to the JMicron External SATA connector via an eSATA to SATA cable and not through the internal ICH9 Southbridge controller and I did not get any ATAPI errors.. Which clearly defines that it is the motherboard problem. I have requested an RMA on the board and I've ordered a different board as it looks like they may hold on to this board for 28 days.
