Just had a phone call from microsoft today. Asking me to to turn on my pc and log in to a web site so they fix some files on my pc. Before he could tell me the web address I told him that I was Microsoft Certified
He then put the phone down on me.

Common scams that use the Microsoft name
Someone from Microsoft Tech Support" calls to fix your computer
You have won the Microsoft Lottery
Microsoft requires credit card information to validate your copy of Windows

The scammers are back at it

God, that one again? Those guys... :hehe:

I propose an epic "Flash-Troll" (it's like a flash-mob, but less of the mob, heavy on the trolling): every time a Bit-Tech member gets a call from these scammers, try and string them along for as long as you can. Pretend to be the dumbest computer user the Earth has ever seen. Struggle 5 minutes with (pretending to) turn your PC on. Struggle with finding the website. Ask a lot of long, dumb questions. See how long they will put up with you.

Post timed results here, preferably with conversation exerpts (if you have a recording function on your answerphone, this is where it finally makes itself useful). Winner gets a cheesecake, my treat! :thumb:

Even better is to fake a break and enter when they call. Pretend to get shot screaming for help and then go on the line with a different voice demanding to know who it is and then say *your next*.

That or offer to give credit card details through email because you don't trust the phone. Say you will take a picture of the card and send a pic of Tub Girl.

Had one of these happen at the end of November, only managed to drag him along for just over 5 minutes before he managed to string a sentence together asking what OS I was using :D
Roars of laughter in the background probably didn't help.

Man, Anonymous and the other 'Hacktivists' should spend some time focussing on these bell ends.

I've hung up when I've received a call, but I still find it annoying.

It's been a good year since I got this call from "Microsoft" customer service/technical help.

The guy on the phone asked me to type in the web address, which I knew was a load of BS, so I typed it into google instead and messed the guy around for 10 mins or so. Was fun while it lasted. :D

I had one of the "Someone from Microsoft Tech Support" calls to fix your computer recently. I was surprised how long they spent trying to convince me they were from Microsoft, even after I told them they were a morally bankrupt criminal.

They seem to hit a whole area in a few days, a relative of mine works in a bank and they had quite a few people who had only realised it was a scam AFTER paying £60 and giving them remote access to their computers for half an hour. This included a very distressed elderly lady with a very ill husband. :miffed:

My mother got a call from "Windows" recently. Although shes not exactly computer-savy she knew enough to know it was a scam so handed it to my father.

He managed to string them along for about 7 minutes but decided to hang up after saying b****r off because the line quality was so poor.

Look i can't quite remember for definite but i'm pretty sure thats against the Geneva Convention :thumb:

don't be silly its a pentium 3 P.O.S (for those not aware the pentium 3 P.O.S was the upgraded version of the Pentium 3 and had added useful user features which they codenamed B.U.G.S). He'll have an up to date operating system that microsoft can provide tech support for you know something like Red Hat Linux 1 or Debian 1
