Firstly thanks everyone who's chipped-in for advice over the last few months: This forum really is the place without equal anywhere

but....OMG!!!! seat of your pants stuff....finally bought the majority of a new build....I've been waiting for about half the time some of you have been alive, so apologies for the impetuousness here :D

how's this for build advice: this is what i've bought - too late to go back now - comments?

CPU - i7 860 - sad about the price, really is, but I wanted a real step up in performance the 750 just wasn't quite twice what I have.....£214....ouch
MOBO - MSI GD65 (got the MSI deal yonks ago...yum)
OS- Win7 Pro (from deal yonks ago...80 quid...yum) will be installing 64bit
PSU - 650W Be Quiet Straight Power
GPU - had a thread about buying a real cheapo till 5800 series are available, but this may be some time so thought I'd wait for FERMI : XFX 4870 1GB (for 100 quid off ebuyer) - should last till summer then its a spare for troubleshooting
MEMORY - 2x2GB (4BG) Gskill cl7 1600Mhz (from Novotech still pretty cheap considering)
CASE - P193 - people on here convinced me Antec 8/9-series and thier noise suppression is the best compromise between performance and quietness
CPU cooler-Corsair H50-1 : ie:the one that fits 1156 - CPC liked it, no idea how I'll mount or maintain it or indeed how loud it is? Help?

I'll use old storage, DVD for now till things are uprightand then 80 or 120 SSD and 2TB 7200 for 'real' storage

My chief worry is still the size of the P193 and the non-modular PSU- am I gonna end up with taught cables all over the place? Also I specced up with a 650W thinking that 5800 series would be actually available - now I have to live with an older GPU as well as a few low-storage HDs to boot - am I gonna burn out?

Oh, you got the good price on the GD65 that's why the £214 over the £200 i7 920, right?

    I'd have plopped for a GTX 260 at £125, or a 4890 maybe, but 4870s 1GB for £100 is a very good buy still.

We didn't actually test the H50 on 1156: it was out before that bracket was available.

Cl7 memory will shave a few seconds off your productivity, or it'll run at 2000MHz CL9 too.

thnx bindi, appreciated, yes that was the idea but I'm still aware of what I might be missing - I don't see 6/8-core being important to what I'm doing in the short term, but my AMD 1800 is whispering to me that I don't upgrade too often - MMX anyone.....yeah:D But the power savings are really worth considering.....

but is there anything I've got wrong? P193 owners? and how do I mount and maintain that damn cooler?

bagman...thanks but I need a whole lot more storage than that..my..erm..mp3' are....very large...

thanks man, but hold on to the storage advice for a few days....I have some 250GB Samsungs that I'll use until everything else is happy..then I have BIG plans

what in heck do I do with this cooler, and do I need to buy lots of power extenders and ultra-long SATA cables?

I worked out what to do with my cooler...'awesome' doesn't even begin...seriously..anyone else with a 750 or 860 tried an H50? My CPU temp meter MUST be broken....

Here's a thought: everyone posts on this forum for build advice - but people rarely give feedback of their build after the event, which might help others. Doesn't seem very communitarian (is that a word?)

new categories anyone: 'post-build gloat' or 'post-build moan'?

Ive got a H50 in my my htpc, its a doddle to fit (install backplate fix mounting bracket to the front only 2 turns, add cooler twist to lock and tighten the install screws all the way)

As long as you have a 120mm fan hole in your case around the cpu socket then your good to go, im not familiar with the p193 but it fits in an antec fusion max no problems
