Hey guys I've got a 'which is better' question again.

An FX5500 has come into my posession, however I know the FX series was a bit **** so I'm reluctant to use it; on the other hand it's a lot newer than my Radeon 9500 Pro.

So my simple question is, which should I use?

why not do a 3d mark run with both and see which comes out better?

I probably will do, but if I could get an idea whether it's worth even testing to see before hand that'd help; the 5500 is in my office PC at the mo (clearly more than I need for office work) so I'm planning to do a sneaky swap if it is a better card. ;)

You can even flash the 9500pro to 9700pro and OC the balls off it ;)

ah if the radeon is faster then I guess work can keep their 5500 :p

I am tempted to flash it and oc it ...... hmmmm might have to investigate that further :D

Erm....no you cant. 9500Pro's already have all 8 pipelines unlocked but only have a 128-bit memory bus, compared to the 256-bit of the L-shaped 9500non-Pro and 9700.

But anyway, the 9500Pro will be way better than the FX5500

:naughty: EASILY the 9500Pro. The FX5500 is just a renamed FX5200 while the 9500Pro is superior to the 9600Pro/XT which themselves can take on the FX5700ultra (a world faster than the FX5500). As said the 9500Pro can't be modded to a 9700Pro but you will be surprised how well they tend to o/c (275/540 to 360/620 is not at all uncommon) and this lands you very near 9700nonPRO speed which is ahead of the most hailed GF-FX, the FX5900XT. Even if the cards were the same speed the 9500Pro is based upon a superior archy and would still be the better deal.

Been using a 64 mb 9500 np @ pro in main rig for a few days now, runing stock clocks (270/270 or summit iirc) plays cs source at high details in 1024 at 60-85fps, very little fps drop or sutter, even in crowded, busy scenes with smoke etc.
9500pro for sure, the 128mb one should be even better than this 64 :)

    Thanks for the info guys

Austin: That definitely makes the decision for me. I'll be sticking with my 9500 pro. :D I think I'll have to grab atitool and start overclocking it!

Highland3r: Out of interest what is the spec of the rest of your rig? I think my 9500pro is 128mb, but at 1024 I don't get anything like those fps in CS:S. :(

me thinks he got an Oc'd intel pentium-Mmmm at about 2.4, which is pretty fast, errm it's faster than a a64 3200+ anyway as something to start to compare with...

well I've oc'd my radeon so I got it running at 340/305, and things certainly fly. GTA:SA looks loads better. I'm gonna run it like this for a while then increasea bit more. :D

First thing I've oc'd, but now I've got the taste. Time to check out the oc'ability of my mobo/cpu. :D

    thanks guys.

FX series also includes 5900 which is a great video card running far cry, hl2, ut2k4, doom3 and other games in very nice detail with pretty good FPS. As for other FX cards I agree! ...(silently) they suck....

For example: I built a pc for myself and my neighboors, both pc's have Athlon xp Barton 2800+, Abit AN7, amount of RAM differs. My video is 5900XT by MSI (128mb) while theirs is fx5600 256mb both AGP 8x.

After few video card benchmarks I found out that my 5900 outruns 5600 3 times on most of the tests.

Although I am nvidia fan (all the way) and I've never had a new ATI (after 1999) video card I DO SUGGEST YOU TO GO WITH ATI this time.

yeah I'm a big nvidia fan as well, only reason I've got the 9500pro is that is was given to me.

    9800PRO kills them both

however i heard the 5000 series of cards generally suck i would opt with the ati card, even though i am a diehard n-vidia fan

;) With a fine card like the 9500Pro I wouldn't worry esp as your CPU (XP2200+) wouldn't get the most out of the faster cards anyway. An o/c'ed 9500Pro gets pretty close to the 9700Pro, 9800 and FX5900 so is none too shabby.

yeah the whole box needs an upgrade so I'm saving to do the whole thing at once rather than bit at a time.
