News Game blamed for hammer murder

I have to say that i am shocked by all this, but all the stories which have come out about this have just made me want to buy the game. This sort of stuff is appealing to our human nature!

In my mind games have about 0.00001%, maybe less than that, influence on people. Ive been playing all sorts of games, i love postal 2 and the like and i dont go round hitting dogs with shovels. There have been a few of these cases with GTA too and ive always noticed that the parent lets the child play the game even tho he is underage. Its like someone in court for driving underage or something similar, and the parent blaming the car manuafacturer that they made the car. But this is normally 1 in 60,000,000 people. You cant take away someones rights because of one person im afraid (this is sort of the same wavelength of the gun ban, but i dont want to go into rant mod )

Im off out tomorrow to get a copy of manhunt, sounds a good game!

but i thing he the kid is 17 and the game is 18 sooooo the game should't be banned the mother of the kid needs talking to thats all

here my question....for the parents of the 14 year old.........WHY IN THE HELL WAS YOUR 14 YEAR OLD SON HANGING OUT WITH A 17 YEAR OLD??

Parents of BOTH children are at fault. NOT THE BLOODY GAME!

Manhunt MAY have "inspired" the location & manner of the murder, but, like some poor woman has NEVER been lured off to a secluded place and raped. But hey why dont we blame James Bond if he had of snuck up behind him and snapped his neck?

if the game is 2 blame? y is it me mates 4 yo sister plays SOF2 and she never gets violent? she is well trained by her parents and they know if suttin goes wrong its there fault coz i spoke 2 them on the matter. she loves gaming that much her punishment for being violent is no gaming. sure some r more mature and most kids r far mor mature than adults and we just get stupid when we grow up. the mother of these kids r tryin 2 say they where right and they did everything 2 stop it, there tryin 2 blame some1 else for there incompotense. wait does this mean bein on bit-tech makes me wanna take a dremel to some1s head??

if there gonna ban video games then they should ban religion as 75% of murder is religously related. but we dont c them doin that??

wait a sec...if we get like 10,000 ppl cant we start our own religion about gaming?? then they cant ban games coz theyre being pregidiced not to mention all those tax benifits

 

i hate it how something/someone always has to be at fault for anything bad that happens in this world

-well you cant blame the kid, as hes 17 and cant possibly be responsible for his own actions (i hate it how under 18s get away with *anything* usually)
-you cant blame the parents, because they are grieving, and surely it isnt their responsibility to make sure thier son isnt playing 18+ games when hes 17, and surely there werent ever any signs that their child was a shall we say "unstable"

that leaves the game i guess, blame them

it takes a seriously messed up person to even consider doing something like this, maybe it is possible that the game influenced him in his actions, but its possible that if he had never played the game, something else would have triggered him off

the kind of psychological profile that would allow someone to do something like this doesnt just develop from playing a computer game

maybe they should ban pornography, or even boobs in magazines and newspapers, because they promote teen pregnancy and STDs

and they should ban beauty magazines because it makes people paranoid about their appearance, and they get anorexic and stuff

and they should ban food because people eat it and get fat... in fact thats what they're doing to mcdonalds - getting rid of super sizes and introducing salads because there has been an increase in obesity.
isnt it down to the person to decide what they eat? personally i dont like mcdonalds at all, but i do eat fast food, and yeh occasionally i do say yes to super sizing, but i eat a balanced diet, get enough exercise and im skinny.

if someone eats nothing but junk and gets fat - thats their own fault. not the people who sold them their food, or the company that produces it
just like its your own decision if you go out and kill somone, you cant blame a computer game for 'making' someone do it, sure a game could influence someone, but its not going to change who they are, or alter their ethical and moral boundaries.
thats why extreme games have age ratings - so only older people get them, who are more mature and less likely to be influenced in such a way

the age limit on games and movies should be strictly enforced as that of alcohole and tabaco, and it should be a crime to give it to a minor w/o parental disgretion, then they would blame the parents and not my precious fps

 

I really hate everytime anything like this pops up, because it is purely based off of opinions. As was stated b4, it is almost impossible to replicate these scenarios in an experiment, so it is almost always circumstantial evidence and opinions. The mothers and human rights activists on one side, the gamers and game companies on the other. On the issue of "Manhunt", while i don't think that the game is the sole responsibility for this kid's actions, I feel that Rockstar when they made this game specifically tried to create something that they knew would be controversial, as they knew that it would boost sales in the same way it did for GTA 3. We've already seen once incidence on this board of "Now i wanna get this game", and as they say, "Any press is a good press". This is all basically just free advertising for rockstar.

That having been said, I find these debates to be silly and pointless. I've played every violent game out there, and yes, i have had violent urges. But never to specifically injure a person around me, more along the lines of "I would love to be in a huge martial arts gun fight like that one level in Enter the matrix". And while there have been a few times i would have loved to have tried something i did in a game, there is a definite line where i know the game ends and the world begins. Who is responsible for me knowing this line? My mother. When i was young she didn't let me play Wolfenstein, because it had a rating and she didn't think i was ready. She knows the type of games i play, but she still allows me to play them because she knows that i am a (relatively) balanced person. If your son has serious psychological issues you need to seek help for him, not ignore the problem until it comes out like this and then find an excuse for it. ah well, i'm off to release the stress of this rant by popping some heads in Farcry.

(/sidenote) before movies and games, they DID blame books. simply do a google for "book burning" to see what i mean (/sidenote)

there are many many many companys out there who have pruduced marketed made or watever violent types of music movies games and meadia

so i hope u have a good lawyer coz its gonna take alot of money and brains to sue these multi million dollar companys

PS while ur at it sue Microsoft as well for letting men download child porn or sue google coz they let a 16yo from where ever to download the instructions on makeing bombs

then u can sue GM ford dodge toyota mitsubishi nissan etc for makeing cars which excede the speed limits of the roads and cause the driver to kill ppl

then sue power companys for letting children stick knives in the walls sockets and killing them
