Hi all, I'm currently converting the garage at home and am going to need wifi out there. Im thinking the best way to do it is to run a wire from the house router out there then (if it's possible) use another router in the garage? Is this possible or will I need something else to produce the wifi? I'm guessing that the wire will be 50m in length. Not sure if that's relevant. Thanks in advance. Mark
You should be alright for a 50m run of Cat5, at the garage end you just need a normal wireless router. One of these would do, although I'm not sure how high quality they are. For a simple WiFi network it would do I'm sure.
I'm using this homeplug here out to the garage http://us.zyxel.com/Products/Details.aspx?CategoryGroupNo=CDEAF3D2-F92C-47CD-9190-AEC06B2D8E76 works fairly well.. have wifi in the front end of our place.. and wifi in the back for the guest you won't get 500Mbps but that's a given.. the switch works well though- saves from having to buy one for the other brands.. belkin is the other one to look at- from reviews the netgear 500 has the least amount of throughput you could just bridge too- but the homeplug is a lot faster than wireless
Awesome, thanks mate. I'll get one of those then. Pc will be wired so the wifi will only be for phone/pad so doesn't need to be amazing.
just to note.. it's just to extend your network out to the garage for streaming- for wireless you'll still need to buy a ap like krikkit recommended if you don't need the speed.. just bridge- assume have wireless in your house already
Would a home plug work? It garage power comes from the houses main board. That means the homeplug would have to go through a rcbo, is that possible?
actually we do have gfci outlets in the kitchen and baths.. can try it out there and see if they connect aye they kind of work.. the connect kicks in and out though- goes red and orange.. might not work but you guys have higher voltage over there in the uk, so who knows
