Haven't been on in eons. I might re-install it and play someday. But the 30GB it takes is kind of ridiculous.

I think some of the drama queens here just need to accept the fact that they aren't very good yet, and won't get good without dying. A lot.

I died A LOT when I first played this (though not as quite as how much I died when beginning to play MWO), and its just part of the learning curve. 10 games in, and you’ll find you have a KD of 1:1 and captured a point on your own. 20 games in and you are sneaking an extra kill here and there. 50 games in and you’ll be right up there with the best of them.

The game isn’t generally a rape fest, certainly no more than any other online game ever created. Most servers have balancing in place to stop players jumping onto the winning team.

For those finding it hard, try the Scan servers – they are pretty well admined.

Also: vehicles OP? No, not really. Do you mean that you can't take down a tank on your own? Big surprise. Tell you what though, Dom, I, and a few others could easily take one down as a squad.

I'm not around loads til this weekend, but if anyone wants a game on Sunday I'd be more than willing to coach you.

    Why is it ridiculous?

29 maps + a single player campaign, high res textures, loads of great sound effects.

Get used to it anyway - game install sizes are going up, rather than down!

Well said and as a squad we also can keep a tank alive for along time also.

The problem with conquest/rush is if you solo it without Comms it becomes a camp fest for both sides dependant on the map.

Get two squads or more on Comms like the old days and we push harf. Playing the objective and kicking some backside.

Myself, Jam, Dannyman and Telltale once turned a Op Metro baserape into a win.

Because instead of camping in spawn we push like hell. One player gets through hides and have the rest spawn on you and boom your good to go.

That is if the enemy are idiots who dont pay attention.

My advice to newbies is to play 16/24 player rush or small conquest maps. Makes the game significantly more manageable and jump up to 32/64 player when you're ready.

And join in with Dom and co, their team play is good.

Also: "vehicles OP? No, not really. Do you mean that you can't take down a tank on your own? Big surprise." Try taking down a tank on your own in real life lol

I play with a few mates and we've often switched to the team being baseraped on OpMet because we fancy a challenge, we nearly always turn it around. The main problem with it is that most players leave the server so you end up with a team that isn't co-ordinated or gelled.

Oh and you get a hell of a lot of kills with an usas/saiga when you're in that position.

Sorry for the massive quote fest and huge post! :)

Sound advice, I definitely don't like the fact that I'm two years behind almost everyone else on the server in terms of loadout and perks (or whatever they're called in BF3).

This was the same for my 5 or so years in a CSS clan, and I don't want to sound like too much of a console player here (PCForLife!) but a year and a half of Reach with a friends list full of "winners" added at random from matchmaking games who are both good at the game and also interested in teamwork, fun and winning has convinced me that playing any game of this sort as a lone wolf is no fun at all. Sure, with 7 terrible randoms on my team in Reach MP matchmaking I might still be able to hold my own and get a win, but more often than not, it takes 3 or 4 other half decent players to make up for the 3 or 4 who are rubbish. I've described this to death on here before, but basically I agree wholeheartedly with what you're saying. If it hadn't been for the 20 or so people I regularly party up and play Reach with now, I'd have gotten pissed off with random BK's (bad kids :p) constantly losing me games looong ago and moved on to something else! Instead I'm a Nova with a Battle Proficiency Rating of 94 because playing with those people for 18 months has pulled me up to their level, and best of all, I've had over 700 hours of immense fun getting there!

Bottom line, don't try to play MP FPS games on your own, it's so much better with other people that you know. This is why I'm willing to give BF3 much more of a chance than some of the others commenting here - I had to slowly build up an XBL friends list of good Reach players over several months, and obviously with time it grew faster and faster, but with BF3 I know that I can just ask you all to add me and I have a good bunch of people to play with almost instantly :D

This was the very first thing that threw me when I shot at someone in BF3. Coming from CSS (which is really the only PC FPS that I have played for a long period of time or at any decent skill level) where the recoil can be tamed by experienced players and compensating for it eventually becomes second nature if you play enough because you're using the same weapon round after round, I found this to be a very alien experience. It's obviously completely different from Reach too, where you can maintain an accuracy level of well over 90% in most games depending on what you're shooting, and more than 60% per weapon over your entire career. It'll take getting used to, but I know I'll get there.

I also agree with you on the default key bindings. Who came up with those? Seriously, 2142 was exactly the same. I changed almost every key bind within the first two days of playing that game. It must be an EA/Dice thing

Thanks for adding me by the way :thumb:

See my comments about playing Reach with a team of friends above. No modern MP FPS game is noob friendly, and you can't expect it to be. I got my ass kicked for a solid 6 months when I started playing CSS until I got invited to join a clan and gradually improved, and a solid 2 months in Reach with a matchmaking win percentage of just 30% until I got chatting to a couple of guys on my team during a game we were winning and they added me.

Agreed - exactly the point I've been making in this post. Will try the Scan servers over the weekend :)

Cheers, that sounds like good advice. Another mistake I sort of knowingly made from the outset was playing on 32 and 64 player conquest servers right out of the gate. Spawn, run, die, spawn, run, shoot, die and so on :p

Oh FFS, I said spotting is OP. I merely meant - tongue in check, that starting out in vehicles is hard. If you really know what your doing you can 1v2 tanks, and get the "OMG they haxor, they take 8 shots and still no dead!"

What really demonstrates the issue is attack choppi's. It is not possible to play them the way they need to be played without all the unlocks, it's just not possible. As gunner you have to have zoom optics and TV missile. If you don't have them then it's pointless being in the gunners seat, I've suicided just because it was not possible for me and the random to actually do anything effective against a proper crew. (Lesson if flying AH, kick randoms from squad to prevent them helpfully spawning on you.)

The one big problem I have sometimes is the player-base that don't get my simple rule #1. All of this game is about fighting over map control. Then when your team is insistent on hanging back way to far, and are surprised they are being spawn raped depresses me. That and "thunk." Oh and vehicle turnovers, you best make sure you die in your vehicle.

All this chatter is making me very keen for some battlefield. I'll be on mumble tonight if anyone's up for joining me and probably at the weekend too.

Coming from another fps my top tips are spotting and minimap usage. These are literally 80% of my consciousness while playing the game.

With the blue filter and obscuring effects that BF3 has (even on low settings) it's very difficult to make out enemy players so you'll want to be spamming Q almost all the time. If you think there are enemies in an area. Spam Q. If you don't know if there are enemies in the area. Spam Q. It's much easier shooting at orange triangles rather than grey-blue soldiers against a grey-blue background. As so many people are spotting most enemies will be spotted at any given time so looking at your minimap is a must. You can work out how far the enemies have pushed up, what positions they're holding and where individual players. Usually when being shot at my first response is to look at the minimap to locate their position, although if they're using a silencer it really ****s me up.

The thing is that you really need to have the map knowledge to really use the minimap well and that'll only really come with lots of time spent in-game. It's the same with every game really, you're not going to be able to do really well until you know all the positions and routes people are likely to take. Particularly in BF3 as there are a lot of "head-glitching" spots which is where you are perfectly able to fire but the enemy can only see a tiny part of your head because of the way it handles the first person POV.

Recoil control is significantly less than in counter strike and it's pretty similar with most guns. Nearly all the go-to guns pull up and to the right so it's pretty easy to compensate and it's not like CS where you really to have to learn the recoil for each weapon perfectly.

Also for maximum effectiveness stick on an RDS, foregrip and heavy barrel for most guns.

There are lots of other little bits but you can always jump on mumble and we'll give you a hand. :thumb:

Didn't read earlier, was off to work. Didn't know what what that last part meant until I checked your profile, usually they'll be several guys adding you, but with Greg's recent input here, I guess they don't bother checking in. Also Dom and TT were both too lazy or summet.

Accuracy, yeah, well there are certain techniques you probably know about already that will negatively impact on the stats, so blindingly good players could have normal stats. The best accuracy I know of is around 50%, but they play very specific scenarios for it (Jika) - they did play competitively - wasn't special. The average player is more like 14-18%, I still maintain I'm only ok though, I believe I could do better.

Telltale and I had an awesome couple of rounds (after the riff-raff left :p), this, this and this. We caught the attention of the admin, and joined their teamspeak, I then recorded that second round to show them that having an "accuracy 4% higher than esl players" doesn't mean much at all (called us/me scripters. Telltale asked what scripting in a Jet is, I responded with autopilot) Proper keybindings + thumb mouse buttons = free skill. Note how Telltale shot 40% while I got 24% In the third round ;)

So pointers with regard to bindings. I've moved spot to V so I can press it all the time with no interference to movement nor firing. MWD is Gadget 1, MWU is grenade select, MWB melee or prone (still working this out, my new mouse now has quite a stiff MWB, will probably put grenade here). TMB1 is Gadget 2, TMB2 is cycle primary/secondary and TMB3 on my new mouse is now full mini map moved from B. That inventory scroll bollocks is a real killer, and the cycle primary/secondary is real life saver, being able to cancel reloads is amazing.

heh, i really enjoy bf3 and i'm pretty crap. In a squad i'm quite capable of doing what I'm told (pick this perk, go engineer, repair the tank). I know i could get better, but it's so much practise and grinding. I did my getting good at an FPS back in CS (0.5b 4lyfe) and now i just want to have fun.

getting the class unlocks is easy, 64 player op metro conquest hardcore. The passage/stairs on one side sees enough deaths that you can max a class in a few hours using tugs for recon, medpack for assault, ammo pack for support and if it's allowed a smaw or rpg for engineer. Engineer's the hardest, but it's tedium, not difficulty. MY 'worst' score on there was something along the line of 3 for 3 with a score ~35000 almost entirely from tugs. it's still teduious, but it shortens the grind required.

Then pick a couple of guns you like with each class and stick to them, you'll get the unlocks quick enough and be far more comfortable playing, and you can then pick and choose other ones to use as you like. My guns of choice are the M16A3 and the L86A2, if i go engineer it's to repair or 'splode stuff, and recon i tend to rush and sneak rather than camp, i've not got the patience to snipe.

I'll be up for some bf3 from ~4.30pm tonight. And it's a looooong weekend.

Which profile? My battlelog profile or my Reach profile? You've lost me

Is Greg the leader of the bit-tech platoon? I see that it's full but someone made a comment a few pages ago about it being pretty inactive at the moment. Has there been a coup or a lack of interest in it lately? :/

There are definitely techniques and gameplay strategies which carry across from my days in 2142 and to a lesser extent (because I played it less) BF2, and being a very tactical player in Reach and pretty much any other FPS game, I can see myself enjoying being part of a squad and actually working as a team in BF3. There's nothing like holding a team to a draw or a close score until the last 5 minutes of a game, then you and your team mates executing a strategy in that short time left which wins you the game because the other team have no time left to counter it. I did that twice in Reach last night - a single flag CTF game which went 0-0 until the last 3 minutes of the fourth round, then my team and I capped it and won, and also a BTB Slayer game which stayed within 5 points of a draw for 14 of 15 minutes and was won by a clear 10 points because I was holding back and saving sniper ammo for the whole game. 9 headshots in 60 seconds :D

As you can probably tell if you've seen my Reach profile (XBL tag is the same as my Origin one) I am a keen sniper, so I'd like to level up Recon as quickly as possible and get my hands on some nice hardware to kick ass with long range :hip:

I have already changed all my key bindings to what felt most intuitive to me but I can't remember them when I'm not actually playing :p No doubt I'll tweak them as I play more and more, but the ones I chose are certainly more usable than the defaults - I'll give some of yours a go as well. I have no idea why they include scroll inventory selection in the game any longer... I haven't used the MW to select inventory in an FPS since CoD2. In CSS, number key weapon selection is an absolute essential, as is cancelling reloads using it, and both become 100% second nature once you've done it for a while.

CS Veteran <3 :) (1.6 for a year before Source was released, then 5 years of ~21 hours/week in a clan at that ;))

I think I feel almost the same about CSS, and that's exactly why I've spent over 18 months playing nothing but Reach on the 360 - because it's more fun and more forgiving if you don't play for a week or two... you don't have to play 21 hours per week during the league season just to keep your aim sharp like I did with CSS! I don't think I'm quite ready to just play casually and not get good at BF3 though. Ideally I'd like to do the same as I did in Reach, which was go from the lowest rank and basically being a noob, to being good enough to hold my own against clan players, all the while staying completely uninterested in actually joining a clan or community and just playing on public for fun. The thing I've noticed and like about BF3 is that you can not be in a clan, but can still bring bucket loads of competitive spirit, skill and teamwork to the public servers and not get flamed into oblivion for it, whereas when my CSS clan played on public servers, it was always a crying match, and when one of the parties of friends I play Reach with rape a team of randoms (players matchmade but not in a party together) it's also the same story.

oldskool CS represent! Was it 1.6 where they added the riot shields?

i might've been wrong, but I think it was 0.5b of CS which had the over-scaled version of bunker from goldeneye in it? back when the M16 was a beast. I was on dial up at the time and the game was horribly unbalanced after i spent over a day downloading it.

When i started uni we had a dedicated server on the residential network, CS 1.3 had been released and there would be a couple of dozen people playing 8-12 hours a day. I miss my education.

I did used to find if i took a break from CS for a fortnight or so it took me a few days to 'get my aim back' afterwards. i suspect bf3 is similar but i've not played frequently enough to get my aim sorted to start with.

I think it was Condition Zero that added the lolshield wasn't it?

BF3 is way, way easier to readjust to than Counter Strike has ever been. Gunmaster doesn't have a patch on Gungame Pro though...

Yeah it was added in CZ and included in 1.6. The Goldeneye bunker I'm not familiar with - 0.5b was circa 1999 so you're definitely a vet adrock! I started 1.6 in '03 and moved up to Source at release in late '04. My clan stopped competing in '08, fell apart completely in '09 when people's priorities changed (myself included) and I stopped playing regularly in 2010 :( I played public servers on and off for another year or so until I bought Reach at Christmas time in 2011 and played that all of last year and all of this year until buying BF3 last week!

And yes, many a night was spent laughing my ass off and having a ball on Gungame Pro servers! :D

It'll be 10 years next month since I started playing CS. Damn I feel old :/
