    Hello

I've started folding for the team in the past few days and I'm trying to optimize the amount of points I can receive. I'm folding on an i7 920 @ 3.6GHz and a GTX275. The i7 is folding away nicely with an SMP client, I'm just waiting to receive my bonus points after my 10th WU.

The question I have is what is the largest WU available for a GPU client? I currently receive 353, 450 or 787 point units (something like that anyway) and was just wondering if there was a way to get units any larger than these? I have gone through the config and set it to pick up big units.

P.S. Is there anywhere that lists the arguments that you can add to the clients? As I'm just starting up it seems quite confusing to find all the different flags available and what they do. I was just wondering if there was a thread that I have missed that consolidated all these?

    Thanks

Hope I can be of some help

Hi there, first of all welcome to the team :thumb:

As for the size of the GPU work units I've been folding using the GPU client for a few years and never had a unit bigger than 787 as far as I can recall, I can't say I've tried obtaining a bigger one although I should probably give it a try now seeing as all the work units I've been getting lately are only worth 494 points. :worried:

There is a full list of the flags and their uses for the CPU clients over on the Stanford Website and there is also this Guide by zodac on Overclock.net forum which includes some GPU client flags as well and might be useful for you :)

Good luck and let us know how you get on with obtaining bigger GPU WUs :D (if it's possible that is...)

    Hey BonaSwirl,

First of all welcome to the team.

Are you planing on running your rig 24/7 or most of the day/night. If so then you can add the -bigadv argument to get bigger points. I would wait till you have done 10 normal units so you get the most benefit straight up (am assume you have a passkey to qualify as you seem to know about the 10 units already). The -bigadv will take from 2-3 days to complete folding 24/7 on your rig but should net between 25-40k a day average depending on WU and what else you use your computer for.

As for the GPU, you can add the -advmethods argument which can sometimes pick up i think they are experimental projects which can net you a little bit more ppd. On my GTX 275's I get 7-8.5k PPD each. No overclocking.

What client/s are you using? There are a couple simple clients to make life a bit easier such as the GPU Tracker V2 (all the flags are tick boxes so makes setup quite easy) or the FAH V7 client. Some people like these others dont, I have used both and have had no trouble, just like the GPU tracker V2 cause of its simple design and incorporates the PPD including bonus points next to each working client ( i also works with HFM which the V7 client currently doesnt).

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks Leroyingo!

Unfortunately I won't be able to run my rig 24/7 - it'll just be on while I'm not asleep - so -bigadv units are out of the question. I am pretty happy with my CPU folding performance though so no worries there. (Fingers crossed I'll be finish my 10th bonus applicable unit tonight!)

As for GPU folding, is the only option to just leave it to fold with big units enabled and -advmethods enabled through the client?

    Thanks!

I hate to double post but as I'm still new to the forums my posts are still being moderated before they appear so I can't edit until it's been past a moderator! I didn't want to sound plain obnoxious as I didn't see the extra part of your post. I must have refreshed just before you added it.

Anyway, I do have the -advmethods argument added within the client. My GTX275 is minimally overclocked but fetches a healthy 9.5-10k PPD.

I'm using the 'no nonsense' console client for my GPU with the SMP2 v6.34 for my CPU. I'm running my CPU with -smp 7 to allow a core for the GPU client. This seems to be the sweet spot for maximum points right now! Just time to work on getting a cool and stable 3.8GHz rather than 3.6!

Thanks for the help Leroyingo, much appreciated! +rep

Avlan, like me your posts are still being moderated so your post has only become visible to me this morning! Don't think I'm just being rude ;)

Thanks for those links, they're exactly what I was looking for! I must work on my google skills. As for work unit size, it seems that 787 is going to be a maximum for now, we'll just have to wait and hope for the future. Hopefully GPU bonuses will become available at some point.

Thanks guys, the help is much appreciated.

(wow this is going to look bad, 3 posts in a row :s )

    Haha no worries :hip:

I just stumbled upon this Guide as well about adding flags to the v7 client which might come in handy if you ever start using it :) It's quite different from just 'adding flags' in the other versions.

As for bonuses hopefully there will be GPU bonuses in the future but I think I'll probably need to upgrade from my humble 8800GT in order to get any if they do come about :hehe:
