My dads friend has a 1966 GTO. On Saturday I went for a ride in it, it is GREAT. The car is rather large, even thouhg it's a coupe it can fit as much people/stuff as my dads Maxima. It is a convertable, although my dads friend said the car is actually a LeMans but he has added GTO logos on it, because the GTO was originally based on the LeMans. The LeMans had the power top. There is a very large V8 and a HO racing suspension. When we went for a ride we didn't go very fast (under 70MPH, keeping near speed limit) but the acceleration is crazy. We turn onto the highway at 15MPH, 3 seconds later we're at 70. The HO racing suspension gives it much better handling than the original GTO. My dad's friend didn't drive too dangerously, most people say he drives like his 70 year old mother (This makes him sound like he drives slowly and swerves, but he says his mom drives at 90MPH in a small Lexus, and he can go over 110MPH in the GToO) My uncle said GTO stood for Gas, TIres, Oil, and he gets 10MPG and has to replace the tires every few months. However he only has to pay $100/year insurance. I don't have any pictures, but it is white with a black convertible top. He says that you can buy a LeMans GTO for around $20,000.
Would this be what you are on about Pontiac GTO Big yankee muscle car Or just add a white stripe down the side and you get Starsky and Hutch
Wrong! The car that they drove wasn't even a GM car, it was a 1975 Ford Gran Torino. Altron... Yes, the GTO is based on the LeMans - both made by Pontiac. The GTO is basically a sports version of the LeMans with beefey suspension and higher output engines with the biggest visual difference being the nose - the LeMans is mostly chrome and flater.
Well, the GTO and LeMans were both HUGE sellers for Pontiac and the Torino was actually Ford's response to pull customers away.
Yup, it looked jsut like that. He added in new engine and suspension, so even though it's technically a Lemans we say its a GTO.
