The 8800GTX is faster than anything else there
Approx order of speed, fastest to slowest:
    1. 8800GTX
    2. 2x7950gt in SLI
    3. 2x x1950pro CF
    4. x1950xtx

The 8800gtx surpasses all the others on image quality as well as speed. Its CPU limited so it'll be good for several upgrades and its dx10 compatible so it is designed for future games.

If you play on 1650x1080, 1600x1200 or above resolution monitor then any option will be good. If you play on a 19" or less monitor then these cards are overkill and a single 7900GS or x1950pro will be fine for max detail, AA/AF.

If its a 17" widescreen then a single 7950gt will give you full settings at excellent speeds. If you're going for a 8800GTX you won't see any benefit over a 7950GT even on a 19" widescreen.
At 20" you'll start to see a slight benefit, it'll run full settings in the newest games smoothly but so will 2x7950gt in SLI or a x1950xtx.
At 24" the 8800GTX will be a worthwhile card and nothing else will touch it.
So get the card to suit your monitor. For reference:
    A 19" widescreen LCD costs ~£200-220
    A 20" widescreen LCD costs ~£260-280
    A 24" widescreen LCD costs ~£580-620

A single x1950xtx is all you need if you plan to go for 19" widescreen, just get the cheapest one you can and overclock it. Even that will be overkill.

For image/video editing the CPU is far more important than the gfx card as it does all the work. A pentium core2duo will be best, try the 6300 or 6400 and get some good PC6400 DDR2 to overclock it with.

    Do you have ADHD?

On topic: I don't see the point in getting an amazing graphics card if you're using a 17'' monitor. Save the extra money you would spent and get some decent games.

if you definetely want to buy a dual card system go right ahead. you'll be able to max out any game you care to mention. you'll have wasted your money horribly but theres always worse things to buy

If you really care about DX10 peformance, and not having to upgrade when games actually come out for DX10 that you want to play, then the 8800 would be a better choice. If you don't care about DX10 games for a while, and don't mind upgrading then, go with the 7950s
