There are several reasons for the search ability being disabled... as for the reasons for PMs being disabled I expect that it is much the same case.... the main two reasons are 1. prevent load on the CPU's on the server imagine all you lot searching, cpu usage will go to 100% and 2. because the forums are on the same site as the main site... it will grind to a holt!
